If flashing the ECU alters boost, is it really necessary to have an MBC?

So the flash eliminates boost taper but cannot raise boost? Guess that makes sense.

Yes, that is smart, get the MBC. Be sure you get all the mods you need for a good setup before the flash, though, unless you don't plan on doing other mods. This is my suggestion and is what I had much success with on my 05:
