evo reliability, i know, i know
thanks u guys for defending me on the college student thing, yeah i've been saving up for awhile now, or else i wouldn't even consider buying a new car. and dsm evolution, i think it does matter what car it is, of course the way u treat the car (number of track days, maintence check ups, oil changes, etc) count but not every car has the same reliability, for example hondas are known for their longevity. and i know ur gonna say they're diff cars, evos r performance cars while civics are not which is why the honda lasts longer but if u compare a honda civic vs a kia whatever, the honda will still last longer becuz it's engine is better built, i've even heard that companies like honda and toyota use more pricey parts to build their engines where as mercedes and bmw use cheaper parts, although the final price of the cars doesn't show that, supposely it's true...

driving both doesn't help, if u read my qusetion i'm asking about reliability, unless they let me test drive it for 5 years, a test drive wouldn't exactly answer my question would it? i'm asking you guys becuz u guys own this car, and occassionally both these cars, ur the ones who can answer whether u've had problems early in the cars life.
They are both extremely reliable. They both have high performance parts that wear out faster than, say a civic's (clutch, pads, tires, etc.) This is expected though and doesn't effect the reliability of the car, just increases the maintainence costs. If you don't beat the hell out of either car, I could see both of them giving you no big headaches, but it all boils down to you, the driver.
Do you have a habit of just driving the car, and not checking fluid levels, tire pressures, etc.? Do you do preventative maintainence, or just wait for problems to arise? These are things you have to think about when driving a high performance car vs. a commuter economy car.
Personally, I have had 0 reliability problems with my evo and I expect it to be very reliable in the future.

get the 9, it beats the sti in the recent showdowns. Iheard the evos snot on the stis @ the etown shootout to-this coming from a sti owner I know. Doesn't matter what kind of car you have its how you drive it as far as realiabilty. If you follow the maintance, check your fluids, and don't beat the p!ss out the car it should be reliable enuff. Find a mod friendly dealership or if something happens take all parts off before you go in. Doesn't matter if you have sti or evo if you mod it more than likely you'll get your warranty voided. Honda voided my warranty when I had tranny problems with my em2 due to aftermarket parts. I tried using the magnusson warranty act to get it validated but still had two more steps to go(dmv and federal trade commision) but decided to swap it out(had fifth gear popout and grinds and third gear pop outs and grinds) which they had a tsb for and I still lost. Like these guys say if you wanna play make sure you can pay.

yeah most of the problems came after they modded, but they had some grinding issues before hte mods. but iono i plan to mod if thats all the problems that come with modding a evo i'm questionting getting one, which is y i need this question answered by u guys

To me as long as you know how to manage your money and have plenty enough a month. Why can't we get evos?
Don't hate bro, he is not asking you if he could afford the evo or not.

As far as the tranny grinding, I haven't had any problems. I changed all my tranny and diff fluids around 8k, and I will be changing them all out again as soon as spring comes around. It's inexpensive and others will agree that it's beneficial to change the tranny and diff fluids often.
i know that some of the issues car and driver had were TSB's on 03's and have since been remedied. also, i don't have a link but sport compact car had an 03 for a long-term test(50,000 miles)and besides the regular maintenance cost, the only thing that went wrong with the car was that the intercooler sprayer broke and mitsu fixed it under warranty.
