safe break in period for IX's
This topic has been beat to death in every single automotive forum out there. It's about a 50/50 split on the proper way to break-in a motor. Some say beat the **** out of it (drive it like you stole it), some say vary the rpms and don't go over a certain amount. But EVERY car manufacturer, in their owners manual, tell you to take the "nice and easy approach". I have not seen one car manufacturer say rev the $hit out of it the second you drive it off the lot...
But as your title of your thread states "safe break in period" i would go with the "take it easy approach" which to me is nice and easy for the 1st 1000 miles as others have stated. Or just follow what the owners manual tells you. It can't hurt... on second thought, i would do what warrtalon says, cause it will feed his ego and make him feel better!

I dont know if break-in of a IX should be any different then break-in of an VIII, but the IX does have different piston rings then the VIII (2 piece design instead of a three piece design), and piston rings are a part of breaking in an engine.

this is getting ridiculous, although the warrtalon bashing is pretty funny. Manufacturers are pretty cautious when it comes to cars, we see how bad mitsu is just with the warranty. I personally waited almost 1000 on my ix to really hit it hard, with a few spurts of speed in there in between. I've read that driving the engine hard in the beginning is good because the heat the engine produces helps to seal some of the gaps from assembly by the manufacturer, the take it easy role i think is meant to be careful just in case some assembly didnt happen properly or may have been off just a bit and it allows the car to align itself or allows the driver to notice these things without over revving and get them looked at

In fact, somebody should give in a call to MMC and tell them they're missing out on the opportunity to hire THE definitive expert on the internal combustion engine, Warrtalon!. Hey, does the IX hold more oil than the VIII? I read through the manual and I think it does hold slightly more oil. Only problem is I don't have the VIII manual anymore so I can't check to confirm.
+1 jamevo8. It's under warranty for 3/36. Most are planning to mod them to some degree at some point so I feel it's better to have something go wrong during this period. I have driven all of my cars hard, real hard and have yet been unhappy or regret my driving style. If you want to baby a car buy a jag.
I have heard that the engines are put through the paces at the factory... Aww hell... just drive the car! If you drive like a sissy, break it in slow. It will like you better for it!
