Bad Experience Last Night!
So last night I left the movies after seeing "The Hills Have Eyes", which incidentally was pretty terrible and not the least bit scary. Little did I know I'd be in for some real horror in the parking lot. So I'm leaving the underground parking lot in my new IX which has about 540 miles on the clock. I have been really conservative with the break in as far as monitoring engine temp and engine speed. So anyway I came to a stop in a line of cars on about a 35 degree uphill slope. Keep in mind the engine was cold and had been on for only about a minute when I attempted to move up the slope from a standstill. I gave it the extra gas necessary to get it started but I proceeded to roll back a few inches. I tried going again about two more times and both times the engine was up to 6000 rpms or so. Finally I embarassingly made it to the top of slope and exited the garage. Immediately upon reaching the top of the slope I noticed the horrible tell-tale smell of a burning clutch. I am really pissed off at might self realizing that I was apparently trying to start in 3rd instead of 1st gear the whole time. I am equally frustrated in the facts that I was highly reving a cold engine and also burning the clutch. The car drove home with no apparent affects, but I can't help but think I might have done a little damage to the engine and clutch. I would really appreciate feedback from some of you Evo veterans as to how durable the cluch and engine are and what your feelings are as to how my new IX has been affected. Thanks in advance from a concerned IX owner.
you definately did some damage since you can smell your clutch. However, the extent of damage from slipping the clutch at 6k on an uphill is not as much as revving to 6k and dropping the clutch to launch your car. I wouldn't worry about it that much since your car is really new still and the stock clutch is durable enough to last a couple of more beatings until you start to see the affects of it.

Man I don't want to be the one to break it to you but maybe you should learn how to handle a manual transmissions better. 6k???? There is no reason it should go over 3500. It pretty easy once you get the hang of it but you have to be quick. Better luck next time!

Thanks for the responses, I feel better about the situation knowing that I only took a tiny amount of clutch life in the mishap.
DSMEVOLUTION, I know how to handle a manual transmission, my point was that I was tired and distracted and accidentally in 3rd instead of 1st. I kind of panicked (line of cars behind me) and thats why the revs were so high.
i dont think any major damage was done, just slipped the clutch really bad, make sure you distinguish 1st gear from 3rd next time to save yourself from embarassment, i believe it has happened to all of us though, i used to hate stopping on inclines, made me feel stressed and scared i'd roll back into the car behind me, but practice makes perfect, your car is fine, dont worry.
^ He was on 3rd gear... to give credit to the driver, a 35 degree slope is not the easiet slope to start on in 3rd gear... but I also understand what you're saying DSM, he should of had it in 1st
dont worry about it ....u have to drive the car more in order to get the engange point of the clutch....or put it in 1 st gear...dont press any gas and slowly reless the clutch...when the car start of moving or sharking ....thats your engange point for the clutch....
