Installing my SBC I-D today and my buddy was walking around my car w/ a Magnet (tool to pick up lost bolts/washers etc) touching my car w/ it.Come to find out the Fenders are Alum and the hood.

Hood doesn't really suprise me as alot of cars have alum hoods now-a-days but the fenders are??
I though only the RS and MR had Alum Hood,fenders & roof.

My car is a 03 GSR w/ a damn sunroof.

 

All Evo's in the US have aluminum hood and fenders. The alum roof is on only the MR and I believe the RS but I'm not sure on that.

 

fenders weigh only 2.8lb each
only the RS's come with the aluminum rood.

 

I'm almost certain the MR has the alum roof.

 

Yes the MR has an aluminum roof.

 

MR has an aluminum roof so as to lower the center of gravity a smidge. Did not know the RS had it.

 

then how much heavier is a gsr?

 

RS AND MR have Al. roofs. the regular VIII/IX is not even significantly heavier. than the two...

 

so if its not much heavier why do they do it lo probably a noob questian but im just curious.

 

The GSR is 19lbs heavier than the MR, i read an article in Sport Compact Car Mag when the MR came out. With all of the weight savings of the wheels, roof, etc., the 6-spd. tranny is heavier and bridges the gap greatly

 

^^The GSR that is being measured is equipped with sunroof. MR is the heaviest model other than GSR w/ sunroof due to MR's 6 speed weights more.

The aluminum roof (available on the MR & RS) takes off 8.8 lbs. and lowers the center of gravity 50mm without lowering the roof.
