HELP!!! Problem with my IX...
well now that the dramatics are out of the way and most people will say just take it to the dealer yada yada yada... here's whats going on. I decided to take the car out for a nice drive up to PA where my aunt lives which is a 45 minute drive from where I live and all was well the whole way up until I started bearing off the highway onto the exit ramp and as I approached the light about to make a right hand turn onto main road leading to her house I take it out of gear with the intent of coasting the rest of the way before coming to a stop and hear a loud clunk!
It didn't sound like anything I had heard before and I sat there for a second wondering what it could have been? Well after realizing there was another car behind me and the light was now green I begin to make my right hand turn and the car is making some sort of constant clunk clunk clunk noise throughout the turn until the car was tracking straight again. So I immediately pull to the side of the road into a gas station puzzled at what it could be. It almost seemsed like a stuck wheel skipping along while the rest were turning normally or almost like a locked diff. where the both rear tires turn at the same rate and cause a skip. So I jump out of the car inspect all the fender wells to see if maybe a cover may have come loose and was touching a tire or some other type of obstruction was causing the noise but I found nothing.
I begin to pull off from the gas station making a left back onto the main road and it does it again... clunk clunk clunk while vibrating the car but as soon as the car is being driven straight or only slight turns of the wheel the car pretty normal. I get to her house and pull into the driveway and there it goes again. Now I'm pissed... I have just turned 1000 or so miles took every precaution in driving like a little ***** up until this point so there was no question as to whether or not the car was broken in properly and I haven't even had the chance to push the car at all and get a feel of what she can really do because I've owned many Mitsubishi's now and have some what of a bad taste in my mouth in terms of build quality and reliability and this is not what I need now to further my belief that
is one of the worst cars ever produced for more reasons then one and before any of you die hard EVO fanatics start bashing me for that statement you better have owned at least what I have and know where I'm coming from. I love the car but if this is the beginning of whats to come then it looks like there will be a IX for sale real soon.
I know I'm jumping the gun here a bit and I have some right consider after shelling over 30K + for a brand new car I would like for one month go by before having to take in to the dealer for some work. I'm no dummy and I 've had the pleasure of owning ALOT of great cars and I wrench on all of them myself so I very well educated when it comes to cars. From day one I could always here some sort of wine which seemed like a gear wine in a transmission that has bad bearings or that was run on very low oil but no one else could hear it. I have a great ear for being able to pick up on sounds and there has always been something not right but for awhile I thought I was just being paranoid because of past experiences but now it just re-affirms my beliefs unfortunately. Someone said it was the turbo and that it was in my head and I kept saying look I've owned 14 turbo charged cars and I think I know what the hell a turbo sounds like so, no its not the turbo its def. something else but what I don't know.
Now here's the kicker... I go to leave my aunts' house while pulling out of the driveway I'm expecting to hear/feel the dreaded clunk and NOTHING, nothing at all so at first I'm relieved but then I start to think about well its not like this is an electrical problem that can come and go. This is def. a mechanical problem and they don't go away usually and then come back. When an oil pump goes bad it goes bad, when a water pump takes a **** its gone, if a tranny starts to grind it doesn't usually get better with time. Well now back onto my journey home, I'm a nervous wreck thinking of all the possibilities that it might be... maybe the someone didn't do a good job when the car was DPI'd and the trans, transfer case or diff. was not filled with oil and now damaged something who knows. The whole drive home the car drove fine as soon as I make a right into my driveway the clunk mysteriously comes back, F*CK!!! Then another right hand turn into my parking spot and what do you know CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK as the car is shaking, un F'ing believable. I have the worst luck I've got all these mods waiting to go on the car and I was going to do them this weekend but something told me to wait and put a little more miles on her until I started the mod party and now I'm glad I decided to wait especially since you know the way the dealers are. Of course if this would have happened with my mods then of course it was the mods that caused the problem and now your warranty is void! Thanks and have a nice day! Y'all come back soon ya hear!
So I guess now that I'm done ranting and raving and if anyone has read up until this point and has any similar experiences or can shed some light on what might be going on I really do appreciate it! I guess its off to the stealership to let it sit for weeks while they wait for some specialist to look at it and get all scratched and dinged up since those dealership mechanics don't give a sh*t

Yeah the light is always on like usual. Your right it sounds like a locked diff. to me too but I just can't believe it... its a brand new car and I haven't beat on it and if this is what I might expect in the future then its always going to make me wondering. I bought the car to have fun with but if I'm always going to be scared to push it then this is not the car for me.
Thanks,
Joe

Check this thread out they are discussing the clunk noise here, hope this helps, haven't experienced on my IX yet, but it seems to be pretty normal-

Sounds like a rear diff to me. Mine did the same thing. Only after the car warmed up sufficienlty would that clunking noise come back. Noticed it only when turning. Maybe the dealership didnt top off the fluid in the read diff? Good luck.

I had a dreadful clunking/grinding noise emanating from the right rear of my IX. it was only really noticeable on slow turns or when taking off from a standstill. It is a very intermittent thing though and needless to say when I took it to the dealer we couldn't reproduce it in the parking lot. I decided to just keep driving the car until it got so obvious it could be easily diagnosed but surprisingly it seems to be getting less over time to the point where I am hardly aware of it now.

I am having the same exact problem you are experiencing. I feel the clunking sound only happen after driving on the hwy after the car is warm/hot and usually happen when I am making a slow turn, It doesn't make any sound going stright. I also realize it doesn't happen eveyday. I only have 6xx miles. I Will be heading to the dealer this week again.

Good luck at the dealer. Please be sure to let us know what comes of it. Sounds like this could be more than an isolated problem.
