Where to stop with daily driver?
Where to stop with daily driver?
If you use your Evo for daily driving...where would you recommend stopping as far as modifying? Right now the evo I'm about to get will have around 310whp (I'm assuming...272s, buschur delux FMIC and piping, 3" turbo back, Vishnu reflash, 20psi to redline, walbro 255lb/hr fuel pump, Vishnu cam gears, megan turbo manifold). I plan to add a set of D2 coilovers, a rear sway bar, rear strut bar, and boost and EGT gauges as soon as I get it. So where would you stop? I don't plan to do much more to the engine...and I think that suspension setup would be fine for what I do. What other things should I look into or steer away from if I have to rely on this for every day driving? I know it's not going to have Honda reliability, but still...I don't want to have it so modified that I'd be unable to drive it everyday comfortably.
I put a lot of miles on mine. So far I've got a full TBE, rear sway, and an EcuTek flash and dynotune. I've decided to wait to do cams until I buy a beater for my daily driver. That shouldn't be too long.
There are guys who would say that you've already gone too far. Some don't like the lope of 272's or the noise of a full exhaust. For those guys, anything beyond stock that increases maintenance frequency, ride discomfort, or poses any perceived hassle is 'unstreetable'. Are you that finnicky? How am I supposed to guess.
Then you've got guys like me who drive a caged car as a DD and figure a trans rebuild every other year is no biggie. I don't mind the big lag on a turbo, but you might. I don't mind not having AC, but you might.
You're asking us to decide for you not only which mods you'll tolerate, but also give you an estimate of the HP those speculated mods might achieve, which is even harder, because I don't know what kind of a tune you might consider acceptable. Conservative, but less occasion for breakage, or actually using the parts you've installed to their potential, with the increased chance that you will find yourself rebuilding an engine at 100K instead of 150K.
While we're at it, we can pick a sexual preference for you, or perhaps a religion. Both of those might actually be easier.
If this sounds like a bad answer for you, it's because questions like this come up all the time, and the answer is always 'it depends.....'.

Mine is my daily driver, gets about 350 miles a week on average. Im currently at BR stage 2, APS BOV, shifter, & RRE clutch/flywheel. I plan on stopping here. Of course, you know how "plans" go.

The only thing I would be concerned with is your warranty. Look at the big picture (ie. if you mod your car and mitsu won't honor your warrantie, can you afford to front the money for repairs). Only you can answer that one.

the evo is always a good daily driver.. just depends what kind of mood your in.. sometimes you just dont want to deal with the cams.. and noise of a turbo back.
Like others have said, I think it all comes done to your personal preference. Do you like the way the car drives/sounds with whatever mods you may have on it? That is the question you must answer. I love feeling every little bump in the road, and listening to the exhaust, it makes you feel like you are part of the car. I drive a Ford F-150 all winter, so the first time I drive the Evo in the spring is so much fun, even if I only go a couple of miles to the local store.
