Question Infamous death whine!

My '03 evo started making the infamous transfer case death whine in fifth gear between ~55mph and ~70mph, sounded like a siren and then disappeared above or below these speeds and in any other gear. I read in other posts the first thing to try is to drain, flush, refill, and pray a fluid change saves my transfer case.
Couldn't find diaqueen lsd gear oil for non-MR in stock anywhere online. My local dealer said he could get me a five gallon bucket for $142.50, is this a ridiculous price? Seems like this stuff is hard to come by!

Quality transfer case rebuild in the Midwest?

Update to previous post. The third Illinois dealership I talked to (Bob Brady in Decatur) finally went through the trouble to find me the Diaqueen 90W, for $46.00. As opposed to the other dealerships that tried to sell me the 75w-85w transmission fluid or informed the diaqueen didn't exist .
Hoping the fluid change this weekend slows down the growth of my death whine.
BTW, I heard a rumor there was a shop in Kalamazoo, MI. that rebuilt and bulletproofed transfer cases. If anyone has a lead on a good shop in the Midwest to do my transfer case I would appreciate hearing about it.

Your problem will not get better my by draining it and refilling with diaqueen. I have an 03' and had the exact same problem as you. Your TC is done. Try to get it repaced under warrenty, I did

And if you get a new TC my suggestion is to fill it with Redline Heavy Shockproof.

The fluid you are looking for can be had for around $35.00 I believe at mitsubishiparts.net. Also, the shop you are referring to that rebuilds transmissions/transfercases is TRE. However, I agree with BBYBruno, I do not think a fluid change is going to save the T-case.

Jon does awesome work and is a really great guy. He did my TC repair and Quaife install. If you have a chance to go to his shop be sure to have him show you how Getrag (or Mitsu) does not set up the TC ring and pinion contact patch correctly from the factory. Some of the results I saw were pretty shocking.

I am almost hoping my Transfer case goes, cuz when it does, it is on it's way to TRE to get not only the upgraded spyder gear sets, but a front LSD. Don't bother with a new one, have them rebuild it. It will literally be about twice as strong. I used TRE when i rebuilt me DSM and put in a GVR4 1st gear which is taller.

Just a quick note. If it is your ring and pinion that is going, or if it gets damaged when the front diff goes, you will be buying a new TC. $1800 - $2000. It can not be rebuilt. If it is on it's way out you are better off sending it in now to see if it can be rebuilt before the ring and pinion gets screwed up.

Also, the front LSD replaces the spider gears, so you won't need both.

I have this same problem and I went to take the car in and they told me because of my mods they probably wont cover it. I still have to talk to the service manager tomorrow because he was not there today. Those of you who have had the whine problem what kind of mods have you had and did the warranty cover it? what dealership did you go to? im in chicago. please let me know.

I would say anything more than an intake, exhaust, reflash then you are on your own. Above that level you should expect to pay for any repairs because the increased power can be a contributing factor to part failure.

Just an FYI, it's one or the other.... The LSD you speak of replaces the spider gear assembly. So you are either getting upgraded spider gears, OR an LSD, not both...

4th gear whines when you are on it all the way. If you have the car in 5th and are above 60 mph with little/no loud whining, you are fine.
