Need Help! Evo 9 rs deal pending
Ha! There is a guy over here on the east coast in Mass who bought an IX MR from them. He did all paperwork through the mail. He flew out and drove the car home. HE DID NOT PAY CALI TAX! He paid tax in MA and drove the car home with his MA plates. And it was all legal, so i'm not sure where this other info is comming from. And no I'm not BS'ing.

Thanks for the link though man, appreciate it.
So here's my understanding of this type of thing. Please note that my solution to the problem was to pay the $1200 to have the car shipped from Costa Mesa to Oregon where I live (don't ask about the price of shipping, it's retarded). However, it seems to me that vehicle sales tax in California is not as cut and dry as we'd all like to think it is.
It would make sense that if you buy a car in California, in person, you pay sales tax on it, just like you would if you bought a t-shirt at the local mall. However, let's for the sake of argument say that I buy the car from the comfort of my living room here in Oregon. All the paperwork is fed-ex'd back and forth, money exchanges hands and titles are signed over. All I have to do is register the car in Oregon and I'm good to go. Does that mean the sale took place in Oregon? Or is it California, because that's where the product is? The devil is certainly in the details here. The differentiating factor is where the actual exchange of the product occurs. If I take possession of the vehicle in California, then I *should* be charged sales tax, since the transaction was completed in the state of California. However, if I take delivery in Oregon, I pay no sales tax because the transaction was completed outside of California.
I have heard accounts on both sides of the fence - those who flew / drove in from out of state and left with a vehicle tax-free and those who weren't so lucky. So I suspect that again, the devil is in the details with respect to how the dealer wants to handle it. Personally, I wouldn't want to take the risk of showing up at a dealership expecting to drive my shiny new graphite gray MR home and have them hit me for $3000 in sales tax, so I chose to eat the $1200 for shipping and be done with it.
And for the record... my personal sales experience trading my 04 WRX for an 06 Graphite Gray Evo MR:
WRX = $16,500 trade-in
EVO = $32,799
Shipping WRX from Bay Area, CA to Costa Mesa, CA
Expedited service, terminal to terminal: $748
(got there in 4 days, was supposed to take a week - not too shabby)
Shipping of Evo to Portland, Oregon from Costa Mesa, CA
Normal service, door-to-door: $1345
All said and done - $2093 in shipping charges.
Aggregate price for Evo : $16299
Total cost - trade-in = $18,392
Total Cost : $34,892
Oh, and $200 or so for registration here in Oregon. But that still puts me about $2000 under MSRP, so I figure I came out ahead on the deal.

/\/\ CA sales tax varies.. from 7.25% up to 8.75%. San Francisco Bay Area has one of the highest sales tax rate at 8.75%.
back to topic, i believe you can still pick up an EVO RS for $25,699 if South Coast ever gets any.. I picked mine up for that price

I think you would pay the tax from the city you live in. Here in Pennsylvania if you bought a car in Delaware you would pay the tax of 6% the PA tax on the total cost of the car. You would get a temp registration good for 90 days. I would assume that it would be like that in all the states on sales of cars to out of state consumers.

the dealership I have around here would'nt budge from 29k before takes + fees for an evo 9 RS too... after like 4 days of negotiating (literally), I got them down ot 29,500 OTD ()I belive about 1200 below invoice).. Just be patient and keep bother them and let them know you're serious. You'll get it.
which do you believe will have a better resale value 04 RS or 06 Rs (which engine)? Dealership is still calling me and I'm thinking to go to the dealership tomarrow? it's a nailbiter, I can't decide!

a. miss a day of work so miss a day's worth of pay to drive the car back, plus pay for gas, OR
b. pay to get it shipped.
Either way, the remaining difference is negligible IMO.
Moral of the story: show them what SC Mitsu is doing, and see if they are willing to deal. It helps to show that you are somewhat serious about getting the car.
