Well, if you're modding to an immediate stg 3, go for an Evo VIII. Once you surpass the stock turbo, the VIII and the IX are pretty much the same car (different turbo, different hotside, different head).

The Evo will break down; that's a Mitsu for you. I'm not saying their junk, I've owned 2, just saying it's not 100% reliable given the cost for nearly 300hp, and then mods to push the hp even higher - more reliability issues come into play.
The Evo will creak and crack and things will eventually chip and crack after 2-3 years. Bimmers are suppsed to be built better. I've been in my buddy '05 M3 and the inside is nice, but it's nothing to spooge over. Now, how it looks after a few years compared to a Mitsu, I'm sure will be a huge difference. No cruise sucks too like someone earlier mentioned. It's just a different car.
AWD vs RWD; depends what you want. I have 1 car I drive year-round. I live in the midwest and have 4 actual seasons. I drive the Evo safely in the rain and snow (with different tires) and fly past everything else with confidence. My buddy parks his M3 in the garage for like 4 months cause he can't drive it.
If you wanna track anything; Evo no doubt.

Btw, the 'darkside' is really a Subaru....

wanna trade? 03 evo 511whp 20k miles. i been contemplating it for a while, job requires a car a little more 'subtle'....so rather than keep the evo and pick up a cheap used accord, thinkin of goin to a m3.

that's gotta suck for you if you have to get an M3 to get poontang.

I looked and drove many cars before realizing the Evo was the ultimate driver's car. The interior is good enough for me. Everything is simple and where it should be. BMWs have nice interiors, but a lot of it just annoys me. It's obviously a personal opinion.

As far as reliability goes, anytime you have a high horsepower car, you're going to have problems. The M3 guys have their reliability problems too. You hear more about Evo problems because we have a lot of kiddies getting these cars as their first. If you know how to drive a five speed properly, don't drive like a jackass everywhere, do clutch drops, etc, the car will serve you just fine. I drive mine to work everyday and play on the weekends and have no problems. It's just still a car.

Go drive one, and then you'll know.

if your a driver the evo is for you...i came from an e36 m3 which is more a drivers car than the e46 m3...and when i test drove the evo...i had the biggest smile on my fast..i felt all giggity like a kid...when i got back into my m3 it just wasnt the same. i had say goodbye. if i ever get a bimmer again, it's going to be a 6 series. dont think any other sports car will do it for me anymore.

I don't know if it helps but I've had several BMW's including an e46 M3. It was a great car. I have an Evo 9 and love it. I get more grins per mile with the Evo than with any other street car I have owned.

The Evo is not a very refined car and not as well built as the BMWs are. For example this weekend I am going to pull my bumper off and take a rat tail file to some of the mounting holes so it will fit better.

On the other hand it is super cheap for what it is, and even cheaper to mod. I can't get over how well it steers for a 4wd car, and the brakes are Porsche good. I am really happy with the car.

I don't think either choice will suck!

Good luck,
Dave

the m3 is such a different car.

its got HUGE respect (both performance and class). It takes a special type of person to stray from an m3 to an Evo. You have to forget about luxuries and think about performance.

My good friend did. E46 M3 with UUC short shifter and clutch stop, plus SS car back. He's never looked back. Just get the Evo w/ leather package. I also owned (gave it to my dad) a Z3 1.9L Supercharged, and I'm a convert aswell...
