Just bought a new IX, are these problems normal....

Hey everyone, I have 300 miles on my EVO so far and this is what I noticed during this break in period:

- rear diff sound, when you quickly get into gear the rear diff hits pretty hard. I know that many HEAVY modified suburus have that same sound. So is this normal? I read many different opinions, what is the verdict on the brand new IX?

- RPM stay and sloooowly drop after a WOT and nuetral shift. I read the 17 page post, and MANY different opinions and ideas. So the people with no mods and brand new EVOs have the same thing, can it be that the RPM stay up for better rev match? This sound like the only logical axplination for new and not moddified cars.

- I had on more but I just can't remember, I will figure it out sooner or later and post

Should I be worried about any of these things or keep thinking that it is a race car and it will make noises and do odd things.

I think the Rev staying is a feature of turboed cars, but that depends on how "slowly" it comes down.....

I am not sure about the rear diff sound....never really experieced it..

I don't have that rear diff sound you are talking about but yes my revs will drop slowly when gonig wot or letting off in high rpm, which I find weird since my 05 only did it when I disconnected the 5k limiter.

1) The driveshaft bounces off the rear carrier bearing - it's not really the rear diff, although it sounds/feels like it. I only encounter this when doing extremely nasty 1-2 shifts, which I try to save for the drag strip. I've never caused it with normal shifting. It may be the way you shift - be smooth with the rev matching.

2) The RPM thing has been discussed many many times, but it doesn't really have a name, so it's hard to find with searches. This is a built-in feature for emissions reasons on 05/06s only. It causes the rpms to "hang" instead of drop quickly like normal. This has nothing to do with mods.

You guys are quick. So the RPM thing is normal, I figured that. But not the Rear hit? That kinda worries me. Since the car the car is brand new, I did not really take it above 5k, but when I gun it and shift at 5k, the hard hit accours in almost all gear, but those are very quick shifts with letting the clutch out very quickly.

It's poor shifting, I believe. I can duplicate the effect in every gear if I shift improperly (in a quick manner).

OK, so how am I soppose to shift when a drive more agressively? I thought the idea was to get into gear as soon as possible

My last 5 cars were sticks, so maybe I have the wrong concept

Thanks for the info so far

It's too complicated to explain in words. You just have to figure out the proper combination of clutch release and accelerator mashing. If it's a smooth interaction, it won't clang, but if it's done improperly, it will sound like you blew your rear diff apart.

That rear hit can possibly be you popping that clutch and slamming the gas. Just remember, be quick but gentle. No reason to slam every gear. Just a nice quick full release off the clutch with your whole leg/foot. And since you're only getting at 5k, it'll drop below it's matched RPM and that could cause the sound too. Just treat it nice, til you get to the track.

I have a black evo IX that I got in January and it has the slow deceleration also with the RPMS. So, in conclusion, don't pop the clutch every gear, slam the gas @ 5k rpm... it's too low.

Thanks Guys. BTW. I remember the third thing:

- When you let go of the clutch, do you hear a small winding noise? I noticed it today when I was parking it in the garage. Clutch in, no noise, clutch out small winding. I noticed that in prevous cars, but never noticed it in a brand new one, then again I never had a brand new one. That normal?

Winding? I've never seen anyone use that word to describe anything related to the clutch. If you hear a rattling with the clutch out, then it goes away when you press the pedal, then that's usually a throwout bearing issue.

When your in neutral, all the gears in the transmission are motionless. When you engage the clutch in neutral, you are connecting the engine to the transmission, so the layshaft and all the other gears will start spinning. The whining (not winding) you hear is the gears meshing together. It's a normal sound, but some transmissions are louder than others.

Is this "winding" you are talking about happening while the car is moving and you let the clutch out (on a downshift)?

sounds like to me you are talking about the general noises all AWD cars make, the drivetrain is very noisey and the evo doesnt necessarily have a lot of noise dampening material on it

i bought a MR last month...i know what youre talking about when you put it in gear and release the clutch. with my driving i dont hear any noise just the fact that i can feel the rear wheel hook up and pulls right away. with the rpm thing i dont notice it too much but my guess is thats the feature of a new turbo car. i have a b18c turbo hatch and the rpm doesnt hang. these thing are pretty much normal you dont have to stress it. just break it in and dont forget to go through all the RPMs as you should (which is the fun part.) oh yeah dont break too hard...those brakes are too freaken new. i have a bad sqeak every so often due to breaking to hard *sigh* (i hate drunk drivers)
