Ok, this is getting rediculous!

Ok, this is kinda long so if you don't feel like reading it then skip to the last paragraph cause I have a ? I would like to see if anyone knows the answer to.

Well Ive had my car for alittle over a year now. I used to have alot of problems with cops in the past with my modded cars but havent been pulled over for a mod related reason in 4-5 years, havent even gotten a ticket in that time span. Also have had no problems with my Evo last spring/summer. Well I just took it out of hibernation last Thursday and driving every chance I get.

So Im cruising on down to send off some mail and get some anti-foulers for an O2 fix. Well this Cop pulls out behind me and just follows me for about 5 blocks, then as soon as I pull into Schucks he lights them up and Im like WTF? Well I immediately turn off the car and my TT has a 2:10 countdown so I put the keys on the seat next to me. As soon as he walks up he tells me to shut off the car and I tell him I did and try to explain why it is still idleing. Well he doesnt seem to believe me but eventually it shut off. He asks for my the normal info and Im like crap, I dont have my new insurance cards yet, there still in the mail. He tells me he pulled me over for not having a front plate, lame, but they are required here. Well he's in his car for 10-15minutes and when he comes up he starts drilling me about my car not shutting off, like I stole it and didn't have the keys to shut it off or something! Well after trying to explain it to him and him not understanding he gives me a $52 ticket for the plate and a $110 one for no insurance.

Now, this morning after work I am heading to my insurance place to get a temp card and bring my proof of insurance to the courthouse to get the ticket dropped when I get pulled over AGAIN!! Well a newbie with a training officer walks up and tells me she pulled me over for no front plate and a modified exhaust! Now keep in mind that I live in Idaho, land of the hillbilly, jacked up, load as he#$ 4x4's and V8's. I have a pretty simple, fairly quiet setup and was cruising at 35 in 4th gear so don't tell me its loud. Well she lets me off with a warning but tells me that if I dont change exhausts that I will be getting pulled over all summer!

WTF is with cops these days? I dont street race, I havent got a speeding ticket in 6 years, and yet I get pulled over twice for stupid crap. Not only that but why didnt the cop that pulled me over the day before say anything about my exhaust? Trust me if it was an issue he would have cause he was being a dick!

Well on to my ?. Does anyone know the DB level of a stock Evo exhaust at idle and say 3000rpm? Also the DB of an HKS or any other aftermarket exhaust at those same levels? Just trying to figure out how loud it really is cause it doesn't seem loud to me. Thanks for any info and sorry it was so long but Im really annoyed right now.

i could be wrong but i think at 3000rpm the stock exhaust is around 92-93db...i know my exhaust at 3000rpm is at 102-103db.

police need to meet a quota every month by writing like 50 tickets.. my cop friend tells me that he writes as many as he can , and when he meets his quota early, he goes and sits in a parking lot for a few weeks relaxing.

its just a way of getting to the point of enough tickets where they dont have to do anything else besides answer 911 calls.

id do the same thing if i was a cop.

I wanna know why the gentlemen with the really really quiet Harleys that drive by at 3am don't get any attention paid to them.

Yeah it was kinda funny cause a beat up old Probe drove by that was load as hell and I pointed it out and she told me not to point! How funny is that. Every day I see at least a dozen turbo diesels, bikes, or muscle cars (old V8's) that are 10 times as loud as my car but are ignored. The frustrating thing is that my car isnt that loud, thats why I would like to find out the specific DB levels.

The cops around here are getting pretty bad also, but only for the import crowd. They leave the V8's and their loud a$$ cobra's alone but want to mess with us.

Yes, it is "illegal" to have quotas. It is also "illegal" to profile. I have several friends that are cops and they explained it to me. While they do NOT have a certain number of tickets that they must write every month, they get in trouble if they don't write enough. Usually there is an unofficial number where under will get you lectured and over you are golden.

This is typical of cops everywhere. They see someone in an Evo and nail him for not having a front plate yet every corvette owner in the country gets a free pass. the same goes for motorcycles and trucks with their exhausts.

Even though i have my plates, i'm not putting them on for another 5 months or so. And when i do, it will only be the rear. I'm going to leave my windshield sticker/registration from the dealer in the windshield and keep a front plate off. Amazingly enough, this has worked perfectly for 2 years now for my good friend on his STi. He commutes daily from Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles and has yet to be ticketed for not having a front plate while driving or while parked. (yes... LA cops will ticket your parked car if they see it missing a front plate).

Man, I would have shut the car off IMMEDIATELY with the button on the TT. It's bad enough that you got pulled over, but pissing off a cop by not shutting off your car after he specifically asks you to isn't going to score any brownie points. It won't hurt your car to not use the TT one time.

Anyway, sorry about your tickets. Check your state's law to see what they allow regarding aftermarket or modified exhausts. Best of luck!

Exactly what I was thinking. All I have to do is drop my ebrake and it goes off. Why instigate?

This is what I don't understand....and maybe it's not applicable to this situation per se, (as they had a legitimate reason to pull you over re: the plate issue) by what's the deal with cops being exhaust police?

Every time I read one of these posts, it inevitably has to do with some mod, usually an exhaust.

I've heard enough Evo's with aftermarket exhausts both on the track and on the street, and sure, they aren't quiet, but they are nowhere as bad as the crapbox Civic's and Saturn's around here with salad shooters coming out their **** and louder than a Harley!

Is this what I can expect from just driving an Evo with an aftermarket exhaust; even for an old fart my age; or should I be thankful I live in Florida (a lack of emissions "friendly" state)?

Well heres the section of the law I was in violation of, or so they say.

(3) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle or a motorcyle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of the vehicle or motorcycle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle by the manufacturer.

They should have added unless powered by a V8! Pretty vague law if you ask me. Has anyone driven behind a stock SRT-4? They are loud as hell.
