Do you guys think that if you put on some tires with less traction and raced that way it wouldn't hurt the drivetrain so much? I know it sounds stupid but with all wheel drive you don't really need the stickiest tires, and the initial wheel spin should take some of the shock out of the driveline? What do you guys think?
Yes, you do need sticky tires, otherwise you spin and waste the AWD advantage.
Yes, tire spin keeps you from shocking the drivetrain, but it also keeps you from shocking the crowd.

i do miss the days i i could brake stand and do a burn out in the box...but oh well we all have to grow up...dont skimp on tires i have seen 3 evos bite the dust cause the owner wanted to buy cheap tires....dont be number 4
Exactly how much can you spin with awd? Sorry but I have not driven a evo yet, and when I drove my buddies modded awd eclipse the tires would only spin for a second and then hook. I don't mean put crappy tires on, just less sticky than stock. Seriously looking at some evo's but I drag a lot and don't want to buy a car and then be unhappy with it.
Well, I can easily spin all 4 stock tires, too, so that's not really the issue. It comes down to the track prep, how much you heat the tires, the rpm you launch from, the method with which you launch, the amount of torque you have, and your tire pressure. You can induce tirespin with more tire pressure. You don't need to get sub-par tires...
If you drag a lot, you won't be unhappy with the Evo, especially with a IX.
You can run 12.8-12.9 stock, then 12.0 with $1270 in mods on pump gas. You can then get down to 11.5 with a few more mods and race gas (or alky), but gearing becomes a limitation after this point (on the IX 5spd or MR 6spd).

i dont know about anyone else and maybe warr can put his two cents in on this as well, but when i launch my evo i get the same thing. all 4 spin for a second and my azz end wiggles out and then she just takes off like a bat out of hell. i have seen videos of some of the big boys draging(AMS,Buschur, and i think dynoflash) and the same thing theres spins for only a second in the burn out box. the only way i can think of to do a AWD burn out is to slap some MT drag radials on and have ungodly ammounts of horse power. but you will never be able to just sit there and spin them up. it goes against the whole 2 wheels pushing you 2 wheels pulling you thing

Actually, raceboi, I do a 4wd burnout each time before I launch even with pretty low amounts of HP/TQ. You just have to overpower the tires, wh ich can be done with a high enough RPM launch. I don't do a stationary burnout, but I spin all 4 and move forward towards the line to shoot off all the dirt, gravel, and water.
Then, I stage and launch without spinning.

well all the track up here arnt prepped very well so the AWD burnout and move toward the line thing is a no go.they make the evos and sti's avoid the box and just make us line up. at least till they learn how to prep the track. washington aint know for its drag tracks unfortunatly.....
In principle, it's a good idea. My 450 whp stang has over 150 passes with 1.6x 60 ft times using 6000 rpm drop-clutch launches on slicks. The rear diff, axles and tranny are stock. I attribute my luck to this very idea -my tires spin just a little off the line, which changes the instant shock to the drivetrain to a more gradual one.
But I'm not sure how this idea carries over to AWD. After all, we're comparing solid axle/rwd to AWD. Like TTP mentioned, wheelhop can be damaging as well.

Raceboi, track prep has no bearing on whether I do a burnout or not. I WISH I could avoid the waterboxes, but at my tracks, they put up cones to keep you from going around them, because they don't want you tracking through excess dirt and gravel that collects outside the normal lanes. Even so, whether the track prep is great or poor, I back up until I'm right in front of the water box, then do basically a 7k clutch dump with the intention of spinning the tires for a while.
