Whining Sound?

Just purchased an 05 evo GSR (now @ 3k miles) and I don't know if im just paranoid or what, but after pushing the car a bit I hear a whining sound that seems to be in sync with the motor. When slowly accelerating after I can hear it...

I remember a sound similiar to that when I had my Eclipse GST and the next thing I knew my water pump gave up and it sucked in the head gasket... Pretty much overheating....

Now, the temp gauge clearly sits in the middle, and the last time this happened it was a nice cool night.... Am i just a little paranoid??

Suggestion: familiarize yourself with the "search this forum" button. Use the search terms "engine whine" and you'll get a whole host of good threads, discussed ad nausea.

BTW - welcome to the forums.

mines the same way. i believe it to be the powersteering pump. Its quite loud on this car. Either way, I hear it all the time.

I'm not sure how you drive your car... But I would try driving in a straight line in 2nd or 3rd gear and pull it in to neutral, see if it still makes the noise. Could be the transfer case if you launch it a lot.

If you have an aftermarket intake that could be the sound as well. I put a buschur intake on my 03 and noticed it immediately. Mine almost sounded like a siren in the distance. I don't even notice it anymore. Hope that helps.

You're right on that one! I have an 03' and have an automotive stethoscope. The power steering pump on this thing makes a TON of noise.

When using the scope and listening to it, it is even noisy if you touch the scope against the lines coming from the pump. Anywhere on any line from the PS pump and it sounds like a siren.

If you just take a screwdriver and set the metal end on the PS pump while the car is running, leave your hand on the handle end of the screwdriver and press your ear against your hand, you will see what I'm talkin' about.

yeah, thats what im saying. Its noisy, and is proportional to the RPM you are at. The car whines ,big deal, if something blows up, take it to the dealer..

this car is no fun to enjoy, if you worry about all the clicks, ticks and whines. Its just too noisy.
