pretty much depends on your area. i live in redondo beach and since it's all rich white surfers, no one realy looks at my car. it's either surfer mobiles or super expensive exotics over here, so a 30k evo doesnt attract the cops as much *knocks on wood*

It's a federal crime to remove the CAT. the only part about california is that cops check more often when your pulled over for suspected aftermarket activities.

A CHP checked for one on my car right after I bought it. He was laying down on the ground and everything looking under the car; and no I wasnt driving or doing anything to attract attention. At that time I was totaly stock. I asked him what happens if someone modifies thier exaust in some way. He said a ticket would be issued and I would have to go to an "official inspection center" (not a regular smog check station). Also a high flow cat is only legal in California if it is C.A.R.B. approved. Even if the car passes smog with a high flow cat, if the cat isnt approved its the same bust as if you are catt-less.

Also the only way it is legal to replace the cat is if the original one was damaged in some way.

in chicago, i was told the penalty for driving without a cat is $2500-$10,000... IL have a new law that any exhaust system besides stock is ILLEGAL but doesn't look like they are doing anything about it... i been running catless for a year with no trouble... pulled over a couple time... no biggie... i came to realize its not worth it because my car got in a accident and was towed to a shop... insurance and dealership said im running catless and thats illegal so they VOID my WARRANTY... i needed a brand new engine... and NO WARRANTY on new engine either because of no cat... so i just ordered a new downpipe and a high flow cat for future use... its just not worth it...

RSR STAINLESS 80MM DOWNPIPE WITH CATDELETE FOR SALE!! $250!

Running a normal straight test pipe in california is dumb.. however you can easily create a fake cat my placing a cat shell over top of a test pipe.. or get a resonated test pipe that looks like a cat. They cannot prove anything.. you will have to go to the ref, in which time you will just put the working cat back on and tell the ref the cop must was just busting your *****. My cars idle smells cleaner then your typical suv.

What he said^ Just take the heat sheid off your stock cat and weld it on a test pipe. Or buy a HFC and gut it if your that paranoid/powerhungry.
