O2 Warranty Problem.

Went to the dealer today have my O2 sensor replaced and they denied my warranty. The reason cause I have a after market exhaust on it. I have not heard anyone have a problem with just an cat back exhaust. They are telling me a modded exhaust damaging the O2 sensor will not be warrantied. How is my exhaust short out the O2 sensor it got shorted will driving in the snow. If this was aftermarket turbo damaging my engine yeah that would be my fault but come on.

(edited to be more tact-ful)

put your stock exhaust back and bring to another dealer, hope the first dealer didn't flag you. Good luck.

I think it is on the computer that I modded my car with a aftermarket exhuast. Thus voiding my warranty, they are telling me that the cat back changed the dynamics of my car with caused the O2 sensor to fail. WTF they are the most idiotic people in the world.

I have seen crap like this before at mitsu dealers. http://www.granatellimotorsports.com/magnusonmoss.htm read this link. I believe the dealer has to prove that the exhaust was the cause of the problem, not just say that it was so they can get out of the warranty.

I thought you were bringing up that stupid website, . Anyways, there has to be away around this, even if its in the computer, they have to prove that the catback cause the O2 to go out, if they can't prove it... than you win. Call mitsu corporate.

Edited first post. It could have been done a LOT more tactfully, than the original post.

Anyways, don't everyone be the first to make conclusions. I've seen PLENTY of my share of "shorted out" O2 sensors, due to not pre-twisting the O2 sensor when putting it back in the exhaust, or it shorting out by hitting the underside of the car.

I could easily agree with a dealership call on this one. If that IS the case, it should NOT be warrantied.

I've seen this a LOT lately... you guy DO know, a dealership MAKES money from the Manufacturer IF they can successfully submit a claim? Sooooo, knowing this, wouldn't it be in the best interest of the dealer to DO the warranty work??

I know this has been covered ad nausea here, but I'll do it anyway.

Magnuson-moss requires them to deny it in writing and the onus is on THEM to prove the aftermarket part voided the warranty.

This is a link to the FTC, full of a lot of hot air, but it's the authority on the act: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/...#Magnuson-Moss

And here's a quote I found, "Under the Magnusson-Moss Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer’s original warranty, unless the warranty clearly states the addition of such aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicles warranty or that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure."

Also check this out from the faq:

The ones that I have personally seen where the O2 was messed up from the exhaust installation, do not even need proof... it takes a finger pointing and saying DUH!

Ya - but those are definitely on the owner. If he had to relocate his 02 (I thought you didn't have to do this on the cat-back??) sensor and did it wrong then it's definitely on him, as you said earlier.
