Breaking in an Evo
Breaking in an Evo
Greetings,
I was just wondering on how to break in a new evo:
- Any max rpm's limit?
- Boost allowed or necessary from time to time?
- Mileage required to call it a 'break in'
- Oil change during and what mileage? (no there is no service warranty or any of the sort from the dealer here..)
Anything else one might consider..
Thanks,
Wael (1,000km on the odo and counting very slowly..)

According the the manual its saids do not rev past 5,000 rpms for the first 600 miles. Boosting is good because it helps to seat the piston rings, and i changed my oil at 1000 miles, but it probably wasnt necessary

GG TROLLS =D
That being said, Yes Ive read 5,000 rpm and I was still waiting to hear on why we should boost it- but that was answered above by saying it helps seat the piston rings. Guess I'll start doing that on mine (120 miles now =D )
I dunno on my first evo I just babied it for the first 1k miles and then had fun. Never had any engine trouble, even @ 60,000 miles.

Not sure how many miles are on your car right now....
Here is my constructive suggestions:
change your oil to a non synthetic 10/30. I changed mine out @ ~500 miles, i couldnt believe how much my mobil 1 synthetic oil smelled like raw gas!
go for a long drive on a highway, ~300-500 miles or so. After about every 20 miles, slow down safely to about ~45mph, put the car in 4th, give it ~1/2 throttle, enough to build some boost, rev it up to ~6k, lift off the gas, slow down, put it in 5th or 6th & cruise, repeat every 20 miles.
This will help you seat the rings.
I did this on a trip to vegas (700 miles round trip), i swapped out my non synthetic oil when i got home to mobil 1 synthetic, the used oil smelled like oil, hardly a scent of gas!
I have 19k on my 03 & I hardly use any oil.
btw, i am a dyno engineer for honda for their irl program, this routine is similar to how we break in all engines, regardless if its going to the track or a dyno mule!
Good luck

but there are 3 of these threads started every week. especially since the IX came out. the answer is in the manual, and opinions on here vary widely. from drive it like you stole it, to dont go over 3k rpms. i say in the middle, dont go over 5k rpms, for at least 600 miles. make sure you boost but dont push the engine for extended periods of time. wait.. thats what the manual says
