It's because most "ricey civics" that sounds like crap have cheap/****ty exhausts that just produce a horrible noise. If you fitted the evo with one of those ****ty exhausts i'm sure it will sound similar.

Probably not....like what was already said the turbo baffles alot of the exhaust. My Civic Hatch had a 3\" Thermal exhaust on it. I took the turbo off for about 2 weeks while it was getting rebuilt, the exhaust sounded alot more like fart can exhaust without the turbo on there.

IMO, evo's and the 4G63 in general have a unique tone. again it might just be me, but 4G63's sound deeper than most ~2.0L turbo engines.

I had a thermal exhaust, high flow cat and DC Sports header on my crx N/A and it had that Honda buzz (ricey noise) When I installed the turbo it had a nice quiet but deep exhaust note, sounded so much better!.... So I think that has a lot to do with it..

so the turbo gets rid of most of the nasty sound, and a thick walled muffler makes it a deep sound. most hondas get their mufflers from autozone for 50 bucks and its paper thin. I've heard evos with thin walled mufflers welded on and it sounds high pitched kinda but not loud and obnoxious like most hondas. because the subaru is also turboed and i love the unique sound of the exhaust. although i like the evo more.

I had a 1969 MG Midget (1275cc engine) with a free-flow exhaust and from what I remember it didn't sound ricey at all. On the contrary, it sounded like there was a lot more displacement there that what really was. Although, I was 17 at the time, maybe it did sound like **** and I just didn't realize it yet.
