Can a dealer do this?
I suck up to my service department at every excuse: All 10s on my reviews; first-name basis with the service writers; nice letters when they do things especially well. It pays off in spades.

In sum, under federal law, the warranty will not cover any problems CAUSED by your modifications, but continues to apply to the remainder of the car. Pretty simple, really, and eminently logical.
And by the way, this is not a question of "voiding" the warranty; it's simply a matter of what the warranty covers.
It's amazing how many dealers don't get these simple concepts. As a lawyer who's represented auto manufacturers, I have no problem explaining it to service reps. I actually kind of enjoy it.

I will not suck up to dip****s that will rip me off at the very moment I am not paying attention. These people take advantange of anyone that is not knowledgeable about their vehicle maintenance or how it works. All those ASE certificates on the wall don't mean anything, because the guy working on your car is probably a new hire (I'm guessing because that is what it seems like)
A service manager from a reputable Nissan dealer told me FLAT OUT that my rear brake pads were at 20%... I figured it was about time I change them, and when I did they were at 40% AT THE LEAST ! Do you know how long I could have waited to change the rear brake pads ????
*rant* I wont even let them change my oil anymore because it takes 45 minutes and they spend all that time looking for stuff so they can tell me it needs repair.
EXAMPLE: You're CV boots are torn for $500.00 we'll fix the boot.
Me thinking: *uh, I can buy new axles for $180.00
Dealer: We can replace the axles for $1500.00

Me: uh, buh bye ..................*leaves*
I pretty much do everything myself, except for warranty work, which I have them do.
P.S. I just got my Evo. My prior experience, mentioned above, has been almost all with Mazdas of various sorts. Generally I have gotten decent to very good service on those cars. We'll see about the Evo.

theres no way they can void the whole warranty on your car because of springs alone, they have to prove the mod had directely caused the problem you brought it in for. if you have a premature failure of some suspension part you might have a problem. But if for example your trans. or t/c goes theyre not going to void your war. because of the springs even though they may try.

Finally someone who figured it out. Congratulations!
Dealerships nowadays are pretty rediculous. On even stock or near stock cars it can be damn near impossible to get warranty service. Friend had a rear suspension assembly on his car completely collapse tucking the wheel under the car and then dragging it for a few feet. Dealer claimed he hit something and made him pay for it, which he subsequently had his insurance pay for since it was a relatively significant cost. That should have 100% been a warranty item.
well legally they can't but some delaers will refuse to fix your car
trust me my friend in maryland was refused for a oil leak becuase
he installed a turbo timer by himself and he has done all the service
with that dealer

Me: Hello, I have a quick question about evo warranty.
Him: ok
Me: If I put on different springs on my car, that are a bit stiffer and about an inch lower, what warranty would it void.
Him: everything
Me: what you mean everything? Engine, drivetrain etc.
Him: Yup
Me: How?
Him: BECAUSE
And HE walked away, leaving me stand there like an idiot :
Man he got me so p!ssed off, he wouldn't even have a conversation with me. They are all nice and kiss your *** when you are about to buy a car, but after you do, they don't give a f@ck.
But anyways, can the dealer void the entire warranty for putting on different springs?

Thanks alot guys, now I'm deciding if I really do want to put on the GF210s on my car. I want the small drop but I don't know if I want the hassle later on. Any suggestions guys?
actually the act is only part of the problem. If you put on coilovers and track the car and the car breaks (lets say a transfer case) they can void your warrenty under abuse. The car has a limited warrenty, meaning it's limited to mfg defects not to any damage you may cause.
It's really simple, they have to be able to prove that you or your modification caused said damage. if they can't prove it they must cover same. The question is, how far will you allow them to push you? I have up access to an attorney thru my pre-paid legal, and it has come in very handy in the past (I've never had an issue yet with the dealer).
