Marine buying an evo!

Hello fellas,
I'm new and I'm planning on buying a car in a few months, probably in June. I been reading a lot about the evo and made my decision to go ahead and buy the 2006 Evo IX MR. My question is, can I afford it? I have 10k ready to make a down payment, and I currently make 1500$ a month in the Marines. Oh yea I also have a good driving record. Should it be any problem for me to make payments for this car? Just worried about my financial stability. Thanks.

Semper Fi.

I think it will be a bit much as an E-2/E-3 or whatever you are, but that will be for you to decide when you do the math. I made a good bit more than that as an E-5 with 5 years experience 5 years ago, and I only messed with an old used DSM that I was able to mod and make fast without a big loan payment and with very little insurance. Your insurance will be quite high, so expect $150-200 a month on top of the $400/month loan payments (after the $10k down-payment). Just be sure to allow room for regular maintenance and gas, because it gets fairly expensive to own an Evo after a while.

don't do it man. my DSM addiction almost ran me into the poor house as a cpl back in the day.

Buying an EVO leads to buying mods, and buying mods leads to repairing broke stuff, and repairing broke stuff leads to buying more modded replacement parts. Slippery slope, my friend.

Plus, your car will be worth nothing in a few years because you will have put 200K on the clock criss-crossing the country.

That 10K you have stashed could build a nice DSM.

semper fi ....don't become a dick like Warrelton

IMO you should not spend anything on an evo due to your monthly income. You don't want to be strapped do you? So lets say 430 car payment, 150 for insurance. That equals 580 almost 35% of your earnings. No to mention gas, oil, and fluids. Forget it if you have issues with it. Also gas and your other expenses( housing food ect).

I would wait til you have a bit more income coming in.
If it was 15 % of your income then hell yeah go get it.

My 2 cents

I wouldn't do it either man. I put down $6k and I am paying $464/month. Plus insurance for me is about $280/month. I am an E4 and I am married, plus I am deployed. I am making just about as much as you do every month every paycheck, and it's still a pain in the ***. Although who knows, maybe you can find a killer deal. I'd just say be careful!

Yea I understand where you guys are coming from. But my housing expenses are taking care of and food expenses thanks to the Marines, as well as College education. I guess I gotta check more on my expenses. And no I wouldn't be driving the EVO a lot because its staying in pendelton and going home would be flying so I wouldn't have to worry about driving the car a lot, and modding wise, I don't think I'll be doing much of that either (hopefully) lol.

As a former Marine I can tell you that it would not be a good idea for you to buy an Evo. Not to mention you are thinking about buying the most expensive one! You know as well as I do that there's no OT for my a little extra mod money so you will find yourself scratching to afford an Evo. Even if you kept it stock maintenance would still be rather expensive. Just do like I did, do your time in the Corps, save some money, get something just to get you around town for now then when you get out, go to work for the DOD as a civilian and then get your Evo . That's what I did and Im already on my 2nd Evo.

I always laugh when I pass by the barracks here on base because there is a beautiful Z06 sitting out front. I talked to some of the Marines that work in my building and they say that he put a big down payment on it when he came back from deployment, but that after the monthly payment and insurance, he can't afford to go anywhere with it. LOL So it just sits there in the damn desert sun all day.....what a waste. BTW what's ur MOS? I was a 2871 98'-03'.

Yea I guess you're right, maybe I should save more and end my service before I start looking through the Dark Side (EVO). But I don't know yet, I might take the risk and GO FOR IT. lol i guess thats what us intel people are good for. I am 0231 soon to be 0211.

As a junior enlisted person I would not recommend taking on the financial burden of an evo. Even if you have no plans of modding, the maintenence of the car can get pricey. Then factor into it that the stock tires wear out fast, clutch, etc. I would take half of your 10k and invest it and look for a more practical car that you car afford for the time being. Just use an evo as motivation for promotion Good luck in your decision. Let us know what you get.

btw - if your mos is in intel then I assume that you probably went to school in Pensacola, FL?

I pull $1600/mo, pay for a bike, my evo, cell, and various other bills. Sure it sucks not having much spendin money at al... But that is the 1 thing I wanted more than anything. I pay $450/mo for mine.

Don't do it...it's even expensive for me as an AF officer. Look, getting an Evo and NOT modifying is next to nearly impossible...very few people stay stock. You will definitely be in the poorhouse once you get into an accident or get a ticket and your insrance goes up the roof. Once again, don't do it. Save your money, place your money in the military Thrift Savings plan with 40% in the index fund, 30% international fund, and 30% in governent bond fund. You will be amazed to to see how much you saved in 3 years. Use it to buy a house. Cars are definitely the worst investment.

So what is the take home message? DONT DO IT!
