Question Does this sound correct...???

I was wondering if anyone knows if the fluid in the rear differential goes away. As in evoparates, when it gets too hot...??? My buddy with an STI, his rear diff. made a noise and he took it to a shop and there was barely any fluid left, the machanic said.... Sounds weird to me but isn't the fluid suppose to be cycled within the diff. and can't be loss... Unless there is a leak... The mechanic fluched the fluid that was left and there were some metal shavings in the fluid but he said its probaly from the break in.... So where did the fluid go??? This is my first AWD car and this is all new to me... I'm was a Honda guy..... Wish that the book on this car would come out soon... what do you guys think????? Got 38,000 miles on my car.... Think its time for tranny, transfer case, and rear diff. flush???? I would like too know....

you will get told to search, BUT...

the fluid in the rear end is sealed. it should never go anywhere unless you see oil soaked diffcase, in which it might be leaking. My jeep with 40k miles still had every drop of oil.

That said, you should change all those oils every 15-30k depending on how hard you drive it. They should also be changed with diaqueen gl5 fluid. Some suggest that other gl5 "rated" fluid will cause damage.

there is not a lotta fluid in rear clutch type diffs... only about .5 quarts. maybe that's why there was an alarmingly small amount? unless the suby spec is different than ours.
