Guages confusion!

Ok here's the deal:

Am getting 3 Defi BF gauges and confused on which is better. Knowing the first will be a Boost, what will the other two better be out of the three following and why!

- Oil Temperature
- Oil Pressure
- Water Temperature

Car will not be circuit tracked, more 'attacks' and 'short races'! ;-)

Thanks,

Wael

Oil pressure, and I would get a AEM UEGO gague. (A/F monitoring device) . I can't answer why, its too early, and I need more coffee in me for that.

Had a cup, I would go with oil temp. because you have the water temp on there stock in the dash correct? I am starting to wake up now, will return after 3 more cups!

Isn't the stock water gauge more of a dummy gauge?

Yeah I think you are right. I was told the top 3 most important are:Boost/oil pressure/Air-Fuel gauge. thats what I have always had. dont know the importance (above the 3 I listed) of these other gauges. just my 2c

I thought the oil pressure is somehow related to the oil temperature.. the reason being that if oil temperature rises, the pressure will be less /or/ if the oil pressure reduces, that would be due to a high temperature...

Dunno.. i'm swaying with thoughts!

I say go with Boost, oil pressure, and oil temp. You already have water temp so you dont need it. And the oil pressure is really important it tells u the health of your car. I used to drive a land criuzer that had a oil pressure guage and i used it alot, it tells you alot.

I would go with boost, oil temp, and either fuel pressure, EGT, or AFR.

By the time you notice you have low or no oil pressure it will have already eaten itself so, pretty much no need for that one.

I like having something to monitor the fuel system with. Fuel pressure is the least effective but, is better than nothing.

EGT's and a wide band are nice but the install might be a little more than your average DIY'r is ready to tackle.

I think you are better off with an oil pressure gauge as you can actually save your motor (if you pay attention or have a warning gauge) over the light that comes on when it's WAY too late. My path is Boost, EGT, AFR, oil pressure and I will add water temp later as well. Outside of that I will add an volt/amp meter for the electrical side of things.

I am not sure what oil temp buys us, anyone? Would like to know the value of that.

You shouldn't get into much boost before the engine is warmed up. Oil and water warm up at different rates so, that's one thing an oil temp gauge does. It is also a good indication of how hard your engine is working. More stress= higher oil temps.

if you serach you'll find another thread just like this one. but i'll put in my opinion cuz it's very well accepted by people that do circuit track and if it's good for them it's likely good for something less enduring.

water temp is the fastest temperature response, barring egt but egt doesn't always tell the whole story and a water temp WILL. when water temp goes danger you stop or your engine will stop for you. PERIOD. egt goes up... you don't know if you went rich, or if your ecu pulled timing and dumped fuel... etc etc etc.

oil pressure, cuz no temp gauge will tell you what your oil pressure or any other pressure is for that matter. water pressure is also important but you'll likely know when you lose pressure there cuz the coolant will make it visual.

boost, you need this only for the peak warning. and that said... it's not even that useful because it doesn't tell you how much mass you're moving which means cold days only show high mass as big boost spikes. otherwise you could be running dangerous lean and not even know it.

that's what afr is good for. but i wouldn't get a uego, the voltages on it don't go down low enough for some applications of nitty gritty logging and switching.

what would i run?

zeitronix wideband with map and egt. digital display shows you all these non alerting parameters. you can watch your afr every once in a while... won't kill you... you only need to watch it on those cold days, like i already mentioned.

and defi bf water temp, oil press and boost.

oil pressure (cause you wanna know if your oil pump is bout to go)
water temp (cause you wanna know if you are about to cook your motor)

Too bad there is not a dual gauge that does oil pressure and temp together (that I know of). It seems like it would make sence to only tap once and record both off once sensor... Anyone know of such a gauge?
