Question about WRC cars

Let me start of by saying this post is for learning and knowledge perposes only

Hey everyone, I was thinking about the sounds the WRC cars make during races (EVO, STI, Focus etc.), and the external wastegate sound those cars make after you let off the gas (the squirrel sound ) I know about turbos, but I am not an expert, nor do I know alot about wastegates (differences between different ones). But can someone educate me on what is the defference between there turbo setup and ours. What would it take to get that sound on a stock turbo of a evo 8 or 9? And what exectly happens in those cars that makes them use an external wastegate and not ours. Pics would be great

Like I said, this is for learning perposes only, so don't think I'm about to do this and so don't start flaming.

Those cars also have anti-lag. and the turbo takes one hell of a beating to deal with anti-lag.

You can run anti-lag with Autronic engine management, but be prepared to replace your turbo, exhaust, and catalytic converter on a frequent basis. Anti-lag generates some serious heat. Cool stuff, nonetheless.

correct me if i'm wrong...
the sound you hear is the anti-lag system. it's installed to keep the turbo in boost all the time by burning extra fuel.

here's some reference if you enjoy reading

the popping/growling sound is the ALS. The squeeking/chirping is actually the wastegate spring against the wastegate seat. My cossie rally car doesn't have an external wastegate and still has that same chirp/squeek that you hear. A big factor is the complete lack of any muffling of the exhaust. I have a 5" diameter downpipe tapering into a 3" straight pipe out the back. you can hear every noise the turbo makes.

Interesting, I always thought it was an VTA BOV that made that noise (squeeking/chirping).

The only thing that will come close to that sound would be a HKS SSQ bov....although I wouldn't recommend it.

The WRC cars arent the only cars that make that noise. I've been to a Le Mans race in Laguna Seca before and the turbocharged LMP & GT cars do it as well when they shift. Sounds crazy.

You are wrong. The chirping comes from the front of the car not out the tailpipe.

If you want this sound run an open element air filter and NO BOV.

When you let off the gas the air goes through the compressor backwards making this sound.

You may/will nuke your turbo if you run like this too much though.

This car actually comes stock with an anti-lag system; the car is a Prodrive P2. Looks a bit like an R8. I wonder how long it'd take for it to have turbo problems if its daily driven...?

ov3rboost3d: Wow, you got 5 people on here that happened to state at the same time it was ALS yet you just come out and say theyre wrong? Umm, youre wrong...

Those guys are always using some variant of NLTS, so there is no throttle plate closure causing a pressure wave to create the compressor surge you're thinking of. It is ALS, end of story.

Rally cars were chirping well before ALS was used.

Maybe I am wrong. I am only going by what Rhys Millen told me. Not that he has built tons of rally cars or anything.
