I read your story 4 times, and I still don't understand what you are saying.

Is your GF listed as an authorized user on your Discover card?

At many pay-at-the-pump gas stations, they now make you enter a PIN or your billing zip code or something to prove it's you. It's possible that maybe your GF entered the wrong info, and as a result Discover locked out your card as a security precaution.

For me, if I accidently hit the wrong key while entering in Zip.. it won't even let you pump

i buy from shell and use my debit car it always takes 3 business days to even post to my account. one time it never even got charged. another time i used a shell gas card and i only had $20 left and i went over by like $5 and just left nobody did anything about it.

i also like shell because it's always cleaner than most other gas stations around. if not shell then mobil

also using the pin at the machine usually doesn't work so i just hit credit and put in my zip code.

I read an article on this before, and they did indeed point out Shell as the worst offender for freezing money on your card. I know this and I keep using them because I think Shell gas is the best.

I use my debit card, which is also a credit card - as I am sure most of yours are. The trick is to actually use it as a debit card by pressing the DEBIT key on the pump FIRST and typing in your PIN number, before swiping. If you just swipe it and go it will default to the credit card function and they will put at least a $75 hold on your money until the bank pays. IF you use the DEBIT function, only the amount you pump will get taken out. I hadn't heard of $300 or more being frozen, but oh well. Unfortunately, I have been to some Shell's were payment by DEBIT card is not an option.

in michigan, they only do a $1 pre-authorization on any credit card or any gas station.
however, in ontario canada, they do a $50-$75 pre-auth on the card. but atleast in canada, you can pay after you pump.
$300 is just outrageous!

I understand your concern, but what Greg stated is a 100% correct. They're just trying to cover theirselves basically.

Maybe you should ask for a Credit Limit increase!

I dont see the big deal on the hold. Its a natural process to guarantee funds. If you dont have the extra cash to cover, you probably should not use that simple luxury of a debit/credit card.

Never had a problem with shell, and I've been using my credit card there for about 7 years.

I believe Road and track did a gas test years ago. I know Shell, UDF, and Chevron were the top. I believe they all together some how. I know BP, and Sunoco or 76 use up to 10% ethenal most car manuals say not to use or no more than 15%.
