Should I just use my drop in without a tune?

I got lucky and bought a K&N dropin filter for my Evo for 20 bux brand new. I just installed it (wiped the excess oil off) and the car runs a lot smoother and my revs smoothin a bit. The question is should I use it without a tune? Is it safe?

I searched that the evo's ecu is very sensitive to airflow changes(?). I also read that it can cause a little misfire around 5,000 rpm (K&N dropin) without a tune but I lost that thread... I'm real **** about not messing up my car so I took the filter off for now. I do plan to get a reflash whenever I have time to drive 600 miles to vishu but don't think it'll be another couple months and want to use the filter now if it's safe

Anyone run a dropin without a tune for a long period with any problems?

Put that f#&^er back in and relax. It'll be fine. Theres been one in the RS for quite a while. No you dont need a flash for a drop in air filter. When you get more mods and get flashed the tuner will tune for it.

Ok, ok I'mma put it back in and run it a bit. But does anyone care to explain why it's safe instead of just saying it's ok? Like AFR (MAF?) from low, mid to high revs effects to the ECU? I read in another forum from a tuner a couple weeks ago about the K&N dropin without a tune that there was some knock around 5,000rpm (some #rpm) because of AFR (MAF) or w/e but can be fixed with a tune to maximize gains (and safety?).

Sorry if it sounds noob but I'd like to understand why it's safe. If you guys don't mind me asking.... if you guys do please don't flame me

thx in advance

Good lord, man, you're talking about the K&N Typhoon, not the drop-in filter. You never have to retune for a panel filter.

You also don't have to drive 600 miles to pay close to $1000 for a tune if you don't want to wait. You can get a mail-in Dynoflash for $199, or even use EcuFlash and get an e-flash for $50.

Ok cool I was hopin you'd answer. Also I would never put that Typhoon on...

That's my other plan if I buy my exhaust and put it on now with my drop in. My other option is to buy lots of parts and get it installed and tuned all in one sitting which for me, I would rather not go the mail-in route.

Mail-ins work great - too bad you are afraid of it. For the money, nothing beats it...

It's best to get a mail-in flash early on with minimal mods, but when you eventually get all your mods on, then get custom tuned. Waiting so long with an untuned IX is just robbing yourself of cheap, reliable power and enjoyment, but that's up to you. You could get multiple mail-in flashes and a custom road tune from Dynoflash for less than a single Vishnu flash, so keep that in mind. I ran 12.26 on my mail-in flash on 93oct with no cams.

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to do a TBE & drop-in with a reflash very soon because I'm getting bored of my stock IX but also value my warranty. You're right I am kinda being robbed doing nothing about it. So if I get a dynoflash mai-in, do they tune my ECU with the same mods I tell them I have (like exact name brand exhausts or they just use any 3")?

It's best to list the exact brand names, because there are cases where different mods have different characteristics and restrictions, but for the most part, the tune required from one TBE to the next is negligible.

So do they tune my ecu with my exact listed parts on their evo or do they not? I'm just wondering if they don't have a certain mod what do they do. I guess I'll just give them a call when I decide on my exhaust and if I decide to keep the K&N for a tune...

Also does AL require upgraded fuel pumps for IX's? That IX pump should hold up to 400hp so I'm guessing no but if it makes things more safe I will upgrade. I remember reading he req'd them for VIII's now because people wrongfully accused him for unsafe tunes...

and lastly you think it would be a good idea to buy another stock IX ecu so I can swap it out along with my other mods for warranty work? I heard they don't notice if you're reflashed but I also heard some are getting aware. I just don't wanna risk voiding my warranty...
