Road & Track: IX MR vs. Cayman S

Check out the new August 2006 issue of Road & Track. It has a comparison test of the '06 EVO MR vs. the Porsche Cayman S. The Cayman S costs twice as much ($36K vs. $70K+). The Cayman actually beat the EVO by a slight margin in most of the road test statistics (EVO is faster 0 - 60 mph and one other test I forget). Cayman creamed the EVO on skidpad and slalom, and its brakes are better. EVO is only 1/10 second slower to quarter mile. EVO had the fastest lap time on the Spring Mtn. Radical loop road course in Pahrump, NV (almost a second faster, I think). Considering the price difference, the editors were amazed by the MR.

didnt make it in time to see the useless 38 posts....

that is amazing....i just watched a video by Best Motoring comparing the 997c4s, lambo gallardo, nsx-r, and Evo IX. it's really impressive how the Evo's always compared with cars costing 2 or 3 times more. in the vid the nsx-r murdered the Evo in the turns, while the gallardo blew past the Evo in the straight like its e-brake was on. but the Evo still managed to beat the c4s so now i know it can beat the cayman S as well.

what a car. with back seats and 4 doors too and with mods it gets even quicker..

Which Best Motoring was that in? I have all but two of them and i havent gotten around to watching them all. The Cayman is a very nice car. I would recommend that anyone in the rs4 or m3 market test drive one before making a purchase.

i only saw the clip here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeOGVCFLUV8

not sure what the full episode is called. the c4s got .01 sec faster for the fastest lap IIRC

and yes the cayman s is a very nice car. the handling is just out of this world...

it'd be a tough choice for me, btwn the rs4 and cayman s though...

Ahh yes... my favorite track! That's freaking awesome that a stock MR beat the Cayman S. One thing I can say for sure -- the EVO is a heckofa lot easier to drive around the tight turns at Spring Mtn than my C5 Z06 was.

The more I look for a new track car, the more raves I hear about the Evo on track, the more I think I should just make it my track toy.... But I love it as my daily driver too.

Richard you've got 2 EVOs now? Maybe that's my solution, heh.....

"Two EVOs for every boy . . ." (and girl in your case ).

I was out of the office most of the day and missed all the hubub that must have gone on in this thread, but perhaps that's for the best, as I was probably flamed mercilessly.

As for EVO MR vs. Cayman S, there was a Cayman the last time I was at Spring Mtn., and I was not impressed with it at all. I passed the guy like he was standing still. Maybe he just wasn't a good driver, but the car didn't seem like such great shakes to me. It's definitely down on power at 295 crank hp from where it should be. Porsche can't give it more hp because they would be undercutting their own 911 line. That put's Porsche in the unenviable position of not making the Cayman the best it can be for internal marketing reasons. Give it about 350+ hp and it would be a much better car than it is now.
