under MSRP/ help me decide
under MSRP/ help me decide
I wanted to start a thread about any dealers who are selling UNDER MSRP.
It seems the fever for over MSRP has slowed and word is that there are dealers selling for under MSRP.
Anyone know dealers selling under MSRP? Have you bought your EVO for less than MSRP?
Someone posted that there was a dealer going $1000 under, but is it true?
Onto the "help" issue.
I hope people will post quickly to this thread because I have a deposit on an EVO. I did it tonight so that they will hold the vehicle for me till tomorrow.
They needed a deposit as this was a dealer trade for a color they don't have.
The dealer has a red EVO which is really sharp, but I wanted a silver EVO.
I was offered a good price but I want to try and get a lower price but I don't want to be unreasonable without knowing what is happening out there.
I have to make my decision by tomorrow morning to either be an EVO owner or not, as far as end of the month goes. The 2 other cars in contention are the 04 WRX and Audi A4 turbo quattro. I know the Audi seems out of place here, but I really do like that car for it's style, features, and solid quiet ride. Hey, at least I've narrowed the field to 3 from about 15.
The EVO appeals to my emotional side the strongest. I don't think I'd regret this purchase. My biggest concerns are everyday ride quality and intrusive sound level. I have driven the EVO and the test ride was AWESOME. However, it wasn't long enough to know if this car is quiet and smooth enough for everyday use. How does the EVO compare to say the WRX in terms of typical street driving, on the highway during long trips, is there a lot of road and tire noise? Interior noise harshness is my biggest complaint about my 2000 Mits Eclipse GT.
Also, the Recaro's are simply excellent seats, at least during the test drive they were. Are they comfortable after a long 3-4 or more hour drive?
BTW, do the seats have a height adjustement? I don't remember.
Thanks for any MSRP info and any advice on making up my mind on what car to get.
I'm thinking I need to evolve and get this awesome automobile.

I test drove a WRX briefly and it seemed like a pretty decent car. Honestly, I don't think you'd be disappointed with any of them. The Audi is probably going to win in the fit and finish department though. OTOH, none of them should be all that bad.
The second day I had the Evo, I had to pull a 400 mile road trip in it. The seats are a little firm, but not overly so. You'll get used to it and feel fine with them for any period of time I think.

I think it is a complete package.
There are some who say that they have paid $500 over invoice. They didn't say where though. Where I am everyone is still over
MSRP. I heard of one dealer in NYC that is selling at MSRP though...
Good luck...
You may have gotten down to 3 from 15 but your 3 are still very different cars. The EVO is clearly the most performance oriented and stiffest handling. The WRX is probably in the middle with the A4 on the luxury end. EVO handles great, rides stiff, and performs admirably. The stiff ride is the price you pay for great handling. Will you be satisfied with it after many miles and hours behind the wheel? Only if kart-like handling is more important to you than ride comfort. Everything is a compromise. You need to decide what is most important to you.
There are plenty of dealers selling for MSRP now. They are even advertising on e-bay. PLus you can check the MSRP dealer thread on this forum.

The STI is an amazing car - no doubt its the best handling funnest car you can find for its price - - but it is LOUD inside at speed - of tire noise - lots of gear noise - its very very firm and bouncy over bumps - - - its not a quiet soft smooth rider like a Audi or BMW - - - - I love it just the way it is - however you may want to take a longer test ride before you lay down your cash to make sure you are happy with the way it is
As far as the WRX - its just not in the same leauge with the evo or the sti - you have to dump so much cash into the WRX to get it to handle and break good its hardly worth it

The 3 cars are on the same line just different ends of that line.
They are all turbo AWD sport oriented cars. The A4 has very good performance for a luxury sport sedan. It's got great all around competence, balancing well between sport ride and smooth ride. Of course, it lacks the extreme competence in handling as the EVO. The EVO shoots to the other side of the line with awesome handling and power. It's more visceral and more sport car that happens to be a sedan.
The A4 offers all the luxury features and comforts of such whereas the EVO offers the mechanicals which I'm enthusiastic about.
The WRX was a consideration due to it's decent performance and relatively low price. I've decided against it really. Sure, the WRX can be made as quick if not quicker than the stock EVO but all the other things require big money such as Brembo braking system, Recaro quality seats, HID's, etc...
Also, the WRX and STi are smaller than the EVO which has very decent room and is more comfortable to me.
So you see, the A4 appeals to my like of quality build, luxury comfort, beatiful design, and stunning interior decorating.
Along with that is has excellent ride and control with one of the best, if not the best, AWD systems available in the US.
The A4 has limited slip on both front and rear and the quicker reacting torque sensing AWD system.
The EVO appeals to my desire for control, handling, useable power, sharp reflex capabilities. It's a very sport oriented car as you all know. It lacks interior refinement but does a nice job non the less. The money was spent in the mechanicals rather then the niceties.
The car I choose will be a daily driver for me for going to work, travel/road trips, and driving enjoyment as often as I get the chance.
Stiff suspensions don't bother me. I had a turbo Eclipse for years and modded the engine along with the suspension. Yes, stiffer makes for better handling. It doesn't always mean the ride isn't good though when setup right. I don't remember the EVO being that stiff however, at least not punishing. It felt firm, well damped, but compliant.
What I don't know is the daily living with the EVO, especially regarding tire and road noise. How extreme is it on the highway?
I don't mind mechanical music at all, but road and tire roar/noise that is too much can really bother me.
So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I would like to know more about the noise levels and wind noise issues if any.
As I said, I don't mind the sport ride, I actually prefer it as I've had cars more along those lines.
Thanks again.

Earlier quattros did have lockable central and rear diffs.

Not really. The current generation A4 quattro has a Torsen central diff. The front and rear diffs are open; the brakes are used to modulate the left-to-right torque split in each axle. Audi has a fancy name for this simple system ("Electronic ...").

A Torsen center diff. is better than a viscous as the Torsen senses and reacts quicker whereas the viscous using fluid viscosity change to react, that makes it respond slower.

The hypoid gears (front and rear) are open differentials.

It looks as if I'm the one who needs to "recheck that".

I did. I got it wrong.
I know you didn't comment on the meritsof Torsen vs. viscous coupling, but I just thought I'd through that into the ring as many believe it's a better system, some don't.
Thanks for the link.

$500 under invoice wow. I'd be shot if i did that. This site seems to be against paying above Msrp. What i was tring to say is with out saying it , is that you might get one with out paying the mark-up.
