I imagine like the WRX you just need to get used to keeping the revs over 2500-3000 to stay in an acceptable powerband, but the triple-cone synchros in the lower gears should make downshifting much smoother than in the Subies.
As someone who just switched from a 3rd gen RX-7 (the standard car, not an R1 or R2 model) to an Evo two weeks ago -- the Evo is noticeably stiffer and certainly louder, but if you're the type of person to buy an Evo, I can't imagine those bothering you much.

I drove the RX-7 today and I can't see myself going back to the RX-7 on a full time basis; I'm an Evo convert already. The RX-7 is still a fun car, but now that I've experienced sedan convenience with the performance of the RX-7, it's no contest...

Around town in the Evo, I tend to keep the RPMs below the power band, just because the car sounds a jet engine over 4000 RPM. I'm 36 years old, and the novelty of racing to the redline between stoplights has worn off. (Not that there's anything wrong with that -- it's just not my thing any more. ) It still has about 180 HP at 3500 RPM, more than adequate for moving from traffic light to traffic light, and when the road opens up and you really get on it, it will put a smile on your face.

Its my daily driven work car. I love it, and actually enjoy heading out to work in the morning. Traffic is no problem, just means I get to see all the other people gawking at the car. City streets mean potential stoplight contests... its an adrenaline rush at every one. I highly recommend it if you have the means...
