A friend gave me his old gauges, but i think he damaged them when he removed them. the back of the gauge just has cut wires on it, and i could have sworn it had a sensor of some type on it. am i mistaken?

no sensor attached to the gauge directly. There is one wire which goes to the sensor and the other to an engine ground...

check out sterwart warner or autometers installation guides on their respective sites and you will see the installation diagrams there...
