From my observation, I thought most incidents were: (and correct me if I'm wrong)
1. Car was tuned, and immobilzer was disabled by the process - 70% fo all incidents
2. Owner left the car running/unlocked/keys @ a party - 20%
3. car was stolen with a tow truck (usually, b/c some irreputable business found out home address) - 10%
basically, from what I observed, there were very few incidences where the car was stolen b/c the owner was very careful.
I for one, do not give out my home address for parts (I use my work/parent's address for non-EvoM vendor parts delivery), when my car goes in for any service, I also give them my work/parents address and phone number...(I dont drive my car for work).
In conclusion, If think if you take these precautions, you can minimize your chances of getting your Evo stolen due to random (yet highly organized) acts of theft. Basically, I believe the theives would have had you on a target/observation list for some time before making the hit...
So my suggestions are:
1. use alternative address for some 3rd party parts and service
2. Don't park you damn car in public lots where everyone can see it! it's like throwing a $100 dollar bill in the middle of a public bus! I'd rather take my chances that some shopping cart would bump my car and park in the middle of a pack of cars. This should also prevent most random acts of vandalism
3. Don't gloat/show off/overrev your car to impress ppl in the neighborhood or public...usually that gets you negative attention anyways...
4. get an alarm.
5. make sure your immoblizer chip is not disable from your tune.
