What setup do I need to beat this car???
What setup do I need to beat this car???
I have a buddy, with a 2006 VW GTI and we have this major rivalry going. For the last year, he has said his Volkswagen is so much faster than my EVO. I used to laugh at him, however after a while he became really annoying. He finally got under my skin enough, that I told him if you think your GTI is so badass, why don't you race me at the Track?
I know the EVO will run laps on him in the Auto X, however he was convinced his modded GTI would spank my nearly stock EVO in the 1/4 mile.
Oh yeah, he has a Stage II APR ECU/Exhaust kit for the GTI which makes around 260hp and 260tq.
No problem though, at the track he ran high 13's and I did low 13's. I was able to take him every time no problem.
However, here is my dilemma. I have and 05 GSR with just an Exhaust No ECU upgrades or anything and he just bought a wicked kit from APR, here are the specs from their site:
Fully developed, the APR 2.0T Stage III kit, produces 380bhp and 340lb-ft of torque. This kit includes a new APR inconel exhaust manifold designed for the 2.0T, APR/Garrett Ball-Bearing Turbocharger, proprietary APR FSI fueling components, APR cast intake and exhaust plumbing, APR silicon hoses, and a custom APR 3” dual-tipped exhaust system. The APR team continued the upgrades by incorporating a new, massive APR high flow intercooler kit with cast intakes that fits in the stock intercooler location. Volkswagen's R GTI Concept car that was also unveiled at the SEMA show uses this same, APR-supplied drivetrain.
This kit is pretty powerful, plus he is going to buy the Quaife LSD... I know the EVO has more potential than the GTI, I was just wondering what you guys would recommend?
- AMS kit?
- Buschur kit?
- DynoFlash?
Bottomline, what do I need to continue to smash on him?

do all your bolt ons, full exhaust, dp, test pipe, ic pipes intake and reflash from any of the respected tuners. all the guys u mentioned above have staged upgrade paths to get you were u want to be. do some research and pick the one that suits u best. good luck.
Well, why do you have just an exhaust? There are huge power gains to be had with very little money. With just an MBC set to 21psi and a nice custom flash, you'd have another 40whp or so. Then, with some cams, another 30. Tack on alky injection at 26-27psi, an o2 housing, licp, and ported manifold, then you're up around 370-380whp. You'll have more to the wheels than he does to the crank, and you'll be able to put all that power to the ground while he spins like crazy.
Call up Buschur and order a forge unos mbc, forge rs dv, walbro 255 fuel pump, 272 cams, ss o2 housing, ported manifold, and licp. Then, get custom flashed by Dynoflash when he comes to SoCal in early December. We don't know if this will beat that VW until we see his dyno sheets and timeslips after the install.

i had a apr stage 3 a4... k04 turbo and it was suppose to be 360hp... with a 1.8 60' i ran a 13.1 which was near amazing... if u can run a 12.7 or quick youll be fine.... thats going to be the best that car can do. now with ur typical driver... assuming he just got the car and still hasnt had enough time to learn how to drive it... hes doing to do a burn out launch.. and suck...
the easiest way to launch but not suggested cause it does a little more damage than a proper launch...
hold revs where u want to be...i have a 6k limiter... between 5-6 is good.. 5k for a ****ty track 6k for a stick track...
let the clutch out so i rolls a little then push it in so it doesnt roll...just a little
right be4 the light goes green.... ps... clock doesnt start til ur car moves..
let the clock out slow at first so the car rolls... and floor it, then let the clutch out as fast as possible without popping off it...
i suggest 1-2 power shift... and shift the rest out normally.... if ur quick enough and see him right next to u.. keep power shifting... if ur ahead..not worth it...
when u become good at launching...you shouldnt roll ur car.... it should take off like a micheal jackson into a pre school
cheers!

and spend 2k..... he can do it with just a mail in.... vw/audi are soo hard to launch
cheers!
Full 3" TBE, Boost controller (manual or electronic), O2 housing, exhaust manifold, cams, cam gears, injectors, and a really good tune.
if you want to get serious get an upgraded turbo.
and nitrous if you feel you arent fast enough

I have a friend with APRs big power stuff, 2871 turbo, built block, upgraded heads........ He can't break into the 12s. He can run 107 to 110 mph, but does not break into the 12s.

EXACTLY!!!! if ur in the 12's ur okay!
he will kick the living **** out of u in a roll though.... so pull the whole i dont street race thine on him on the way back from the track
cheers!
Bro just do what the other guys told you... As said above with little money you will have at the wheels what he will have at the crank, plus the advantage of the 4 wheel drive...
Have you ever tried to launch a 380bhp FWD car? on the streets its almost impossible as you have excessive wheel spin in the first 3 gears (usually)...

I use to have a high HP FWD car and unless he's on slicks, he'll be lucky to cut better than a 2.0 60'. I only managed a 2.2... ran a 13.3@111mph with a power:weight ratio of about 1whp:10lbs (260whp:2600lbs). You have to feather the throttle in 1st and 2nd, and will only get full traction in 3rd.
Is that '380' hp at the crank or wheels? If at the crank, then figure about 330whp and that car weighs about 3300lbs? So he'll probably run a low 13 at just over 110mph.... You don't need much at all to beat him in the 1/4.
After you spank him at the 1/4, go kick his *** on a road course
