Drag Race RISK???
Drag Race RISK???
My stock IX has 6,500m on it. I think its time for me and her to get on the real asphalt. Im planning to go to 1/4m DRAG RACE this weekend [in a legal racetrack].
My biggest worry is breaking my car and having it fix is not part of my budget YET.
Like I said my car is stock. Now my question is:
Is it a BIG risk for my car & my wallet[clutch, breaks & tires] to drag race[maybe once every 6 months]???
I only plan on having fun and not go all the way...at least for now.
Or
should I just watch
other people all day.
I've been driving stick for more than 5 years now. 1 year on the EVO.
Thanks guys

Other than your clutch your car should be fine since it is stock. If I were you I would try to slip the clutch coming off the line rather than just side stepping or doing a 7k launch. I have had good luck with the stock clutch as long as I didn't hammer on it when taking off.

If you know how to launch properly. If you don't, come out the hole slowly. You will have slow times but quick speeds. You don't want to mess up your drivetrain parts (t-case, trans, diff, etc.).
Or if you have a good idea on how to launch, keep in mind that if you can get your car rolling even a little before the beating and clutch dumping begin, it will help alot.

I look at drag racing this way.
it is really not that much different than getting on to a typical freeway on ramp and really putting the coals in her.
i wouldnt worry about it at all. as long as your comfortable with you car and are good with the clutch, and it is good mechanical working order go have fun. shift at 7k through four gears and give her hell.
have fun and dont sweat it.

Clutch - eh I like what others have said - pay to play. Just use the 2step method. Do not, I repeat do not try to use a low rpm slip (snakedelong). The more you slip the more you will burn it. The 2step should work fine - it will grap then you will go, not you will slip it and burn it then you will go...
Brakes and tires? This is 1/4mi not a track day. You shouldnt be eating those up.
But in the end, if you dont have the money to fix it - dont race it.

At the lights use shallow stage. This means as soon as you engage the 1st amber, slowly roll into the 2nd amber. As soon as that is lit, stop. ((This gives you a few extra inches to get it moving before the timers come on.))
Clutch in, gas to the floor, bouncing off 2step. Walk the clutch out a little bit just to the point that you feel all the slack coming out of it. Almost to the point of moving the car - hold it right there.
Amber, amber, green --- walk the clutch back fast but not dumping. Hold on for dear life and you are off and running (of course go before you see green - its all in the timing).
When done right it feels like all 4 are spinning and you are going like a bat-outta-hell.

Push in the clutch all they way, make sure car is not moving at all and put gas pedal to the floor. two step launch control will kick in hitting about 5k max rpm while building a little boost. when the last yellow light goes start releasing the clutch a bit until the clutch starts to grab and car starts to move, once its rolling let the cluctch all the way out and put the gas to the floor. launching these things take a bit of practice. you may smell a little clutch and some would consider this normal. if you see the tach moving but feel like your going nowhere, get out of the gas right away because you lit the clutch up.
