Story Time!!!!!!

Ok I was extremely excited after receiving several packages STIkiller. I have done many mods to the evo and finally thought it was time for a Walbro fuel pump. It arrived and I was finally relieved. I went to the car to install, took out seats took out pump assembly ect... I finally pull the pump and take a look. The pump that was in the car already was a Walbro!!!!. Same part number ect.... I bought my Tarmac used with about 13,000 miles on it from a Carmax in the DFW area. Every time I meet other Evo Enthusiasts they have always asked me if I had cams... because it sounds like it. I have always had idleing problems with the car, I always thought it was from not having a fuel pump and my intake. I pull off the cam cover. The gears are stock but the nuts on them have been wrenched on. I don't wanna pull the valve cover to check but I might eventually. I replace the Walbro with the new Walbro and put everything back to normal. The car does idle better now. ( I think the fuel filter was clogged.) So thats my story. I wish I could get ahold of the owner before me. The car was bought from Austin, Texas and it was sold to carmax with 13000 - 14000 miles on it. If anyone knows the owner let me know I have a world of questions. Well thats my story. Opinions welcome.

Oh and Carmax has the title till it is paid off and will not release info.

Carmax has a strict "unmodified" sales rule, I say you have a case with them.

That would be like winning the lottery for me. I just want to know what else was done to the car. Cams? Clutch? Flash? I have no clue.

Your in the same boat I'm in. Since I bought mine used "stock", I have found out I have 272 cams and an aftermarket clutch. I'm still trying to unlock the ECU to re-tune it, because it was tuned before. I hope I have a fuel pump also. I talked to the orignal owner, but he said he never modified anything. BS. Buying a used Evo can be like trying to solve a puzzle. But hey, I'm not complaining about having cams. Hope you find some other goodies.

Shouldn't take but a few minutes of some of the local evo enthusiasts looking over your car to find out what's been done to it.

Valve cover is easy to pull, and on a low milage car you probably don't even need a new gasket.... I would get one anyway, but if the old gasket is still pliable and in good condition just keep the new gasket set for later use, or sell it to another EVO guy

Pulling the valve cover is no big deal just need a new gasket to put it back on. But if you got a reflash (as long as it wasnt a mail in) than you should know the hp numbers and they would tell you if you have cams. How much are you making at the wheels? What are your other mods?

Sounds like mine. Bought it from Carmax last year and with 43k on the odo (bought it with 21k) the clutch is still great. Did I mention I have done about 30 launches with the 2 step?

Also when I installed the AMS cone I noticed my airbox had different bolts than stock.

Wondering if I have any more surprises.

HP unknown at this time.. mail in...

I havent really ran the car at full potential. I wish I would have known about the walbro before my flash, I would have had it tuned for it.....
As for mods now I have
Greddy Profec II Spec B (20 psi on 93 Octane)
Fujita Hard pipes and Intake
Walbro 255
Axel Back Exhaust

(quite possibly cams)

I knew something was wierd about the evo when I bought it. It had UK badges (sign 1) and now I know for sure about the fuel pump.
The cam gears have been wrenched on I can see the marks from using tools on them..

I am going to have the car reflashed to accomodate the Pump, but should I wait till I have a peak at the cams?

Should I easily be able to tell if they are aftermarket or not?

Thanks for everyones Imput.

It's too bad you couldn't datalog with the old pump first... I mean, if it's the same thing it'll need the same flash lol.

Not knowing the mods and having a mail in flash would prolly be a bad combination, especially if you can't log any data for the tuner, I'd have it done at a shop where they can dyno and a/f right there so there's less guesswork

Even if you pull off the heads and hold the cams in your hand it's nearly impossible to tell what they are. Or at least that's what I've been told. There was some concern on my car that my 264in/272ex combo might actually have been something else because of the baseline power curve. Eventually we facked with the cam gears and everything came together. At one point I asked if we should just pull the cams and check the specs. My tuner said you'd need a proffesional and some diagnostic hardware to determine whether an aftermarket cam was say a 264, 272, 268, or an 280.
