New EVO v STI Tail wheels bra air dam, headlight covers & more

Well the EVO v Sti debate is over, at least for me. I purchased a new BLACK EVO last night. The cars are just so close performance wise and with the higher cost of the Subaru being just enough to cover a 2nd set of wheels and tires (not to mention the EVO looking so much nicer) I decided to go EVO. I'm not racing it so believe it or not the clincher for me was the EVO having a sunroof and rear wiper. It may sound silly but in a black car a sunroof is a must.

While I am awaiting delivery I have a few questions I was hoping someone out there may be able to help me with. I'm not sure if I should post these seperate so I apologize in advance for lumping them all in one post if that is a mistake.

1) Can anyone recommend a product to use to protect the carbon fiber wing from sun fading? I know it's not a wax but I'm not clear on exactly what it is.

2) Can anyone lean me toward a set of affordable wheels. I want to stay factory size so I can move the ADVAN's to these new wheels and keep the Einke's for winter. I'm looking for a black wheel and haven't seen many reasonably priced wheels out there that fit the EVO. I know they are 17x8 but I don't know the bolt pattern/size.

3) I've been checking out the Mitsi accessories on their web site and I was wondering if anyone knew what the front air dam/air dam additions they are selling look like and if they fit under the factory bra.

4) Has anyone purchased the Mitsu factory bra? I've had one on my GSX for years and as long as you only put it on a clean car and take it off when it gets wet it does not scratch. Any bra recommendations (i.e. don't bother,...)?

5) To protect my headlights I wanted to find a smoked plastic headlight cover. Has anyone seen them being sold for the EVO yet?

Probably enough questions for now. I'm sure I'll have more when I get the car in a few weeks. I'll post some pictures then, but the car looks great in black.

thanks

I would look for a UV protection factor in the wax... I'm using Zimol, I hope it works.... I would not recommend using a bra on any car. I bought one for my fist Miata and it did not work out well. Those things will just trap moisture (you can't be taking them off and on all the time). The moisture and dirt that gets trapped between the body and the bra will cause more damage than the normal road hazzards. Also, they end up looking like crap, they never fit well, etc.

Won't the bra reduce engine cooling? I mean look at the front end they didn't put all of those openings on there for nothing.

I found some wax from (believe it or not) 3M that says it is 100% UV protectant. Got @ Autozone; for the $$ it better work

So far the cars I've had have all had bras. The GSX I have now runs fairly hot and the factory Mitsu bra is opened or screened everywhere the cooling ducts are open. The EVO may be a bit more challenging to the bra designers with all the openings but I'll bet they allow the same amount of air.

In my experience with the last 4 cars the bra has saved some major chips in the paint and as long as you always take it off when or before it gets wet and only put it on a clean car the scratching problem is minimal or non existent. If you saw some of the cuts in the bra you'd know how bad the paint damage would have been.

It is a hassle taking on and off but it also does look pretty good, especially the well-fitting factory bras. I'm just not sure because of the front end of the EVO being more upright than I'm used to (GSX, Talon, RX-7) but I would think the more upright the more the rocks would hit dead on instead of glancing off.

Maybe with the EVO all the cars will be behind me anyway...

hey if you want a bra, that's your choice, but you'll never catch me with one on my car... they look ****ty as all hell...

you're gonna have a tough time finding "affordable" black wheels that will fit your brakes... well, that depends on what is "affordable"... Raillart has wheels that would work for you... don't know who you should contact though... do a search on the site for them...

headlight covers...? please NO...! don't do it... if you are that worried about them, you can get some clear film to mask over them, so they will still look as they do... not sure where to get it, but you can search on the web for it... the EVO's headlights are so pretty, why would you want to cover them up...?

I guess the bra and headlight covers are a matter of opinion or personal taste. Personally on a black (and only black) car I think they look good and they do protect the front end and headlights. I guess if you've ever had to pay to replace the entire headlight unit after a rock wiped it out the covers wouldn't seem so bad.

I'm waiting to see if Mitsu or someone else have a photo of the car with a bra to see if it's nice or coyote ugly.

I like the headlights too and I can appreciate their design and form, however that doesn't mean the car can't have different "looks" with and with out covers and/or bra. I like being able to mix and match the three depending on conditions. It's easier to get bug splat off a bra than a bumper but I do want to see what it looks like first to see if it is sleek or fugly.

As far as wheels it's a tough call. Black wheels on a black car can work or fail miserably. To make that more confusing they have all black wheels, black spokes with silver rims, abd black spokes with lettering on the rims. Again on a black car if this is done well it can look nice. I've seen some interesting ones on edgeracing.com but I don't know if ANY fit the EVO or if they are simply crappy wheels. I've also seen what Tire rack has to offer for the EVO but the closest they come is an "anthracite" color which to me starts looking like brake dust on a silver wheel. They do have a cool setup that allows you to try the wheel you want in the size you want on the EVO in any color of your choice. To me most of them don't look as nice as the stock Einke's so I'd rather go in a different direction like black. I do like the white wheels but only on white cars. Any idea where I can find Ralliart black wheels anyone?

Has anyone seen what the actual Mitsu EVO accessories "air dam" looks like. The list it as a $231 item with no photo. Has anyone seen it yet??
