Friendly debate, bad to leave car in gear?

This may be pretty stupid to most of you, but my friend and I got into this argument last night. He asked me why I left my new EVO 9 in gear when parking it. I said well my driveway is on a little slope and god forbid the e-brake fails, being that it is in gear it's another safety precaution so that it doesn't roll into the street.

He tried to argue that leaving the car in gear is bad for my transmission. I argued that how could it be. Ofcourse he had no evidence to support his argument and I have no evidence to support my argument. So to settle the debate I told him that I would make a post asking the EVO Pros. I know it's a dumb argument, but it is what it is.

Thanks

No it won't hurt your transmission at all to leave it in gear when you park the car. In fact I would say you should leave it in gear for saftey when you park on a hill.

No there is nothing wrong with leaving you're car in gear as long as you set the E-brake first, Never let you're car rest on the Transmission.

I would think that not putting your car in gear when parking it is dangerous. If you want to make your friend happy, then shut the car off, engage the parking brake, and then the put car in gear. Since you enaged the brake before the gear box, it should take any "stress" off the transmission. I would never park my car out of gear!

Yep, you're fine. Just like Jewish_Santa said, let the car roll onto the e-brake first. Then slip it in gear :]

I thought so. I always shut the car off, put the ebrake up, then put it in gear as all of you have stated. HAHA he will see this thread and still try to argue with me. Damn camaro drivers lol.

Thanks for the fast responses guys.

It doesn't matter if you set the e-brake first with a MT. The main thing is putting it in the right gear! When parking up hill, you should put your car in reverse. When parking down hill, you should put your car into first.

While I also don't have any real data to back this up - Saab acutally has a reverse lock out that prevents you from removing the key until the car is placed in reverse. I would assume if this caused any significant harm they wouldn't force this scenerio.

i never leave mine in gear but thats just because of the turbo timer. when ever i left dumb *** friends drive i'd tell them "Do -NOT- put it in gear when you shut the car off. it has a turbo timer"

3 of them have put it in gear. those 3 friends have lost driving privledges on random generous days.
