Same here with my IX. At about 1k it started to shift smooth as glass and has stayed that way.I have 8500 miles on it now and after putting in an ACT MB7 HDSS clutch with the prolight flywheel its even smoother and more percise.

im getting quite a bit of mixed answers. im just hoping for the best. i suppose this is a common issue that no-one really talks about. i thought i was the only one getting annoyed by the notchyness but i guess i was wrong. oh wells ill get over it...i cant wait until it gets softer..

doesnt it have to do with the Evo being AWD and not RWD or FWD?

I drive a civic for now...and it's pretty smooth...and yeah it's a bit more ummm rough when I drove my dads MR...even though the MR is a bit smoother than my friends IX...so thast what I'm assuming?

My IX has 4500 miles on it, and it's as notchy as when it was new.

It never really bothered me much though, just another small quirk in the long line of quirks that Evos have. =)

Soften Up The Stick

What I Did Was I Changed The Trans Fluid Because Of The Metal Build Up Especially With A New Car. Maybe You Should Do That Too. And U'll Feel A Difference. I Used Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil 3 Qts Is All You'll Need.

It's notchy no matter how many miles you've put on the car.

Personally, I like the snick-snick rifle-bolt action.

Mine's still just the tiniest bit notchy at almost 10,000 miles, but it's not bad at all ... a very nice shifter by my standards, which are pretty high, since I used to drive a Miata (typically considered one of the best shifters in the world). Way better than my brother's WRX (too notchy). Night and day compared to a VW (way sloppy). Just about right, I'd say.

it gets smoother but it still isn't as smooth as a honda...it's mainly the lower gears that are notchy....i don't know why....it's like sometimes they will shift smooth and at other times it's like it's real notchy....wierd

mess around with the shifter a lot while the car isnt on, when you're at a stop light, or after you throw it into neutral (shake it fromleft to right)...it'll help loosen everything out
