Anybody had their shifter stop shifting?

Backing out of the garage today, tried to put in first and my evo is stuck in reverse! Clutch feels normal but shifter just slops around back and forth but not side to side.

Took apart center console and the right side "slide rod" moves back and forth but left side no movement. I was hoping I could fix this myself but cannot see any obvious problem. Any advice? Please!

Under the hood you can also check for issues in the linkage arms. Where the two cables come to the levers on the tranny. Have someone move the shifter and see if both of those arms are working together. 1,3, and 5th should move forward and move from driver side to passenger side. If I remember correctly. 2nd 4th and reverse move towards the firewall and in the same sequence driver side to passenger side. I had an issue with mine after I changed my clutch. There is a white block that connects the linkages togther and allows for proper movement, yours might have spun on the idler linkage arm causing an interferance. Do you have second gear?

Same thing happened to me. Your shift linkage came apart, right at the bushings. Not a big deal, but you washer is probably gone, you going to have to get a new one and a cotter pin.

only reverse

I only have reverse - won't come out of it. And where should I look to see if my linkage broke and the washer? Thanks!

Mine did the exact same thing, but in 1st. Im telling you, you linkage just came apart, nothing is broken. I will get a pic to explain what I am saying.

EDIT:

Here is a link to show how to install new bushings, should help get you to the linkage so you can see if I am right, and help you fix it.

Linkage came apart - you were right!

Looked at it and lower linkage came off. I was able to put it back on but it will probably come off again. The top one has a press on half washer thingy that is large enough to keep the linkage from coming off. The bottom one does not have one. Wonder if it came off somehow. Will have to research if one is supposed to be on there.

Yeah, I just looked at mine (doing a leak test) and it was the bottom one that came of of mine too. But the pic above will look exactly like the one you can't see (the one that came off), so yes, there should be a washer and a jesus pin holding it on.

What I think happened to mine and most likely your is that the jesus pin came off, washer fell off, linkage came off the rubber bushing. My fix was a friend has a lathe and I had his grandma make me a bushing out of aluminum, worked good.

ok so it sounds like I am having the same problem. after removing the battery tray to get access to the linkage. everything seems to be connected. when some one shifts the gear selector in the car, everything moves from up top. I do not have 1st or second gear. I pulled out of my drive way like normal and drove a drove a distance of maybe 100 yards and went to go back into second and realized it wasnt there. realized right after that 1st was also gone. any ideas ? is there anything else to check? thanks everyone

Jersey Dino, your problem is MUCH more severe. If your linkage isn't a part (on the trans brackets or under the shifter boot), then you have a major trans issue.
