AEM or Flash
Well, you didn't ask that question. Is that now your question? If so, let's continue...
My first answer is that I don't like to spoonfeed people answers without making them think. People who just mod and don't think end up with crappy Evos that they know nothing about and don't understand when it breaks, so bear with me.
Ok, so why would you even ask this question? Do you know what a standalone ECU is and does? Is it not obvious that you would want to get LOTS of mods and a flash before even thinking about ripping out your perfectly good stock ECU? The most power that I know of on the stock ECU with a flash is 582whp without nitrous. Typically, people start worrying about upgrading to an AEM EMS when they cross the 500whp range, because the stock MAF becomes a restriction, and the ECU loses resolution. So, unless you're somwhere near that level of power, I would not suggest even letting it cross your mind.
However, if you ARE at that level of power with a big turbo running meth and big boost daily, then I would suggest CONSIDERING an AEM EMS. Like prostcj said, though, if you're asking this question, it's a safe bet that you should NOT be getting a standalone ECU. It's not a toy.

This just saved me from asking other questions, thanks. I'm looking into running 400whp or around there. I"m currently looking into starting on the Buschur Stage 1, and work my way up.
