HKS Camshaft selcetion/difference
Hey guys,
Not a newbie, so I tried searching, but haven't found the specific answer yet.
I'm looking to buy some camshafts for my Evo, from the searching I see that HKS are most popular. What I don't understand is the difference between 264/272/280. I see that most also get 272/272 pair, but why. Evomoto says that it's set up between street and all performance. My question is what makes them "street" and "performance", what numbers they give out.
I know cat-delete is all performance/track, but some of us use it, right?
Thanks for all the help

Try to search again, there is a ton of information on this site about this subject. Basically the difference is where you want the power band. 264s low end grunt/272 more mid-range power/280s more top end power.
The difference in the camshafts rating boils down to where they give you power. While the 264's will retain more TQ lower in your power band (Auto-x) the 280's will give you more grunt up top for drag, or highway applicatoins (if you're into that sort of thing). 272 will give you noticable HP up top, without sacraficing as much TQ as the 280's do.
For instance, I've had the pleasure of driving a friend's 03 a good amount and can give a good comparison to my 05. Both cars are running intake/TBE/flash, with the only difference being the 10.5 hotside on my car and the 2003 has HKS 272 camshafts. The 03 makes 335 HP and 300 TQ. My 2005 makes (or made) 300 HP, and 315 TQ. Where my 2005 was better around the Auto-x course with the stock cams (25_?) the 2003 would walk away under higher RPM's (5000+).
It all depends on what you want to do with the car. For just daily driving you would be fine with the low end that the 272's give you, but 264's would idle more smoothly and keep the TQ.
Cat-delete's are used by a LOT of people, and it's said that they are track/racing setups because it is not "legal" on the street. However, it is an easy mod to gain HP.

. I'm more into HP(1/4), even though I'm planing on going to the track.. I guess 272 would be just a walk in between
For a weekend 1/4 mile racer, 272's will be great. People have issues with larger cams sometimes (idle, part throttle, etc) and that's not fun stuff if you want to drive the car daily.

Not there yet. Never tried Auto x, planing though this year. Never been to the track either, so I have big plans for this spring, but don't know if I'm going to like it or not
In that case I would suggest racing the car before you put too much money into mods. The issue is that building a car (even a little bit) for drag and for Auto-x are two completely different directions. If you install cams now, go to the drag strip, hate it, then go to the Auto-x and love it, you'll want to rip out your cams. Although you'd have fun with the car in whatever racing you decide to do, if you want to be competitive you'll need a solid modification plan which can only come from actually bringing the car to the track (or Auto-x).
Save the $ on cams now and buy a used 2005+ turbo (w/10.5 hotside) for $400-500, then decide which type of racing you like best
