your drving skill, his driving skill, weight of the cars+people onboard
1/4 mile, drag, you'll win
high speed - you'll be smoked like a salmon
long range, depend on your driving skill, i've smoked a e36 m3, with an Evo V, 3hours drive, the gap was 30mins

CTLancer is correct. Respect a well engineered car. I own an E46M3 and sometimes find myself defending Z06's and the like to other M3 owners. I'm a enthusiast who has owned many cars, (AKA an old guy) there is no best car for all roles and circumstances. For me, now, I need a back seat that can occasionally hold up to three people. That’s why I’m in an M3 over a two seat car. Four doors would be fantastic, more bang for the buck is icing on the cake, so I am considering an EVO. I would like to hear about differences, likes and dislikes from those that have both or have driven both extensively.
I agree, M3 is a great car. It is definitely not in the same class as the EVO. I love the EVO but I also love the M3. Because I only had 30k, I got the EVO, but if I had 50k, I'll probably get the M3. That way, I'll get the luxury + performance.
I am an E46 M3 owner and will be an EVO owner soon. I test drove an evo 2 weeks ago and I have no doubt the evo can lap faster than the M3 on a track. But the straight line acceleration is not quite up there with the M3. The handling is just insanely great and the braking is just
. I definitley want to buy the EVO.
I still love both cars, but I also think the evo is a better deal if performance is all you are after. As for the guys bad mouthing the M3 for the blown engines, the engines are NOT failing because BMW forced 333hp into an NA engine. It's got nothing to do with that. If it was that, they would not be making any more of them. Rather it was due to faulty rod bearings used and swapping them with proper ones seem to amend the issue.

The EVO only pulls .98 G's on the skidpad stock and slaloms at 70+ mph, but i'm sure any BMW can do that with its "awesome RWD."
and to the person that says an EVOs AWD is not an advantage over the M3s RWD on a launch is very misinformed. I never seen an E46 M3 turn a 1.7 60 ft time....**** i never even seen a sub 2.0.
crap shoot you need to learn a couple things, and stop misinforming people because that's all your doing with your posts. Lots of misinformation. AWD = more traction = more grip. Simple as that....it comes down to grip. When your RWD car breaks loose how do you regain grip? You push the accelerator and the Rears grip. Same in an AWD car except all 4 wheels are gripping. Yes the front wheels are pulling the car into understeer, but the rear wheel are pushing the car into oversteer simultaneously; therefore, there is a perfect balance between front rear.

Not to mention the AWD Audis that dominated some of the touring cars series before they were outlawed.
Just because BMW chooses not to make a performance AWD system does not mean that it is not a good platform.
BTW, in the same article that tested the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the M3 around a course also tested a UK spec Evo 8. The Evo 8 was quicker on the road course.

hey listen up children i have an evo and my bro has an e46 m3... evo has it light to light and the m3 has it in the highway... and i repeatthe m3 is not electronically limited and no my bro has no work on it besides an exhaust... on a 4th gear run on the highway the evo has it till the m3 hits 6500rpm in the same gear...
Please, if someone has an intelligent argument for why AWD is better on dry tarmac, let me know.
S4 vs M3
Your ignorance and assertions (here and in other posts) are bordering on trolling. This is coming from someone who has owned 2 M cars by the way (no hater).

Some people can't see past the AWD sticker on their current cars. Yes, AWD cars can make good cars. Not saying there is no use for AWD. For someone like me who only drives when I choose to (I take the train to work in the city), I'll take a car that is ideal in ideal conditions: RWD with 50/50 weight balance. I recognize the AWD is better in foul weather, but I don't drive "enthusiastically" in foul weather...anyone who does on public roads is a nuisance (plenty of cases in point on this board when sports car meets guard rail).
My original point though was that the M3 is a great car. I'm obviously not taking anything away from the Evo by making this point. Hell, for the money, I think the Evo's a better car. But that does not mean if I had the keys to both dangling in front of me, I wouldn't grab the M3's (and never look back).
Misinformation? Please.

As far as the S4 versus the M3, good for the S4. Two different cars and it sounds like Audi did a better job (I haven't read the article). I'm was actually talking originally about a RWD Evo, not an Evo versus a "similar" car. If there were an Evo VIII with RWD, it would blow the AWD Evo out of the water on dry tarmak.
I guess I forgot to say this before: just my $.02!
It's not an article, it's a video. Now what does it mean to you when a car with less power, more weight and a softer suspension still laps a road course faster, its only advantage its drivetrain layout... I know what it tells me...
