Sequential Manual Transmission and Cruise Control

What do we have to do to get the likes of Ford (with an AWD Focus), Subaru (with the STi), and Mitsubishi (with the Evo ) to start competing for our dollars with the goodies we want?

Sequential Manual Transmissions are not exotic or even expensive these days, but who do we have to explain this to in the autmotovie world to get them as options? THe MR2 Spyder has a SMT for $1000! BMW and Prosche have them for a bit more that are a little quicker

SMTs do not change the transmission, just add the paddle shifters, electronics, and hydralics to operate the clutch.

Subaru needs to offer a Sunroof and SMT on the Sti.

Mitsubishi needs to offer Cuise Control and SMT on the Evo.

Ford needs to offer a Turbo'd AWD layout with SMT on the Focus.

As consumers we all win when they start competing with the goodies we want.

I am going to wait a while and cross my fingers that these easily and inexpensive options show up on these great 4 door sedans!

I agree....

Can't understand how the sti ever went out the door with NO sunroof and the EVO out the door with no CControl.

I know the arguments for weight savings and cost savings but these are 30K+ cars and everyone expects these minimums.

Order it without the sunroof or remove the CControl if you want to save weight for racing.

Make these parts options so the races can avoid them and the rest of us can have our cake and eat it too.

I would love a sequential manual shifter. If one were offered in the Evo in 2004 or 2005, that was as good as the SMG in the e46 M3, that would be reason enough for me to sell my '03 Evo and upgrade....

As much as I love shifting through the gears, I've driven a SMG-equipped e46 M3 and its amazing technology.

Almost forgot about the lack of a radio on the STi too! DOH!

And when are the 6 cd in dash changers going to get here for the Evos (and maybe the STi, heh).

some touch screen DVD player OBD-II diagnostic DIN fold out panels would be nice too like on the Skyline in Japan.

I love Sequential Manual Tranny's too especially the M3's SMG.

But Porsche does not yet have a "real" SMT. The Tiptonic is a slush box with a torque converter. It gives you the ability to shift via controls on the steering wheel but it is not a true SMT that is based on a regular stick controlled with a clutch controlled by actuators.

The only real SMT's are Ferrari, BMW, and the Toyota (MR2). The best one of all is about to come out in the Audi TT (3.2). It is called Direct Shift and is based on a double clutch system that is supposed to shift even faster than BMW's M3 and be a lot smoother in auto mode.

I heard the DirectShift will automatically shift for you if you hit the redline..... that would totally suck, defies the purpose of having SMT totally. Who cares about shifting faster if all it acts like is a quick-shifting automatic?

GlobalCLK,

If Direct Shift selects the next gear at redline it would take a lot away from the involvement that a true SMT gives you. That's why I love the SMG in the M3 so much. If you don't shift in SMG, you will hit the rev limiter just like in a regular stick. I hope Direct Shift doesn't take away too much control from the driver as it really promises to be a great tranny.

In the meantime, it would be nice to see Mitsu, Subaru, Porsche and some others come out with an SMT as an option in their high performance models.

Fingers Crossed

Well let's hope Mitsu, Subie, and all the others jump in with some SMT variations.

It would be nice to see one that auto shifts for you at redline and can be switched to not do so for road racing. That would make the drag racers and daily drivers happy, and when you're up for some spirited driving, you just don't get the same workout with your left foot as those clutch enabled folks...

Where do we start a letter we can all get behind to send to some manufacturers to start offering these goodies?

personally i don't even think they need a SMG tranny.

the GT-A will be perfectly fine. They would only need to get EPA approval (~$1M? I've heard) and use the same engine (maybe turn down the boost a little, so it doesn't kill the tranny).

255hp GT-A Lancer Evolution in Lightning Yellow please
