I has an EVO VIII RS bone stock 21 mpg city.Had it flashed with TBE 21 city.Sold it got an EVO IX RS bone stock 21 city, had it flashed with same TBE 21 city.

Best believe the EPA estimates on the window sticker are derived at the lowest rpm shift points possible.

Higher rpm's-worse mileage,it's that simple

I think thats up to a certain point. I drive exactly how the manual tells me to (shifting around 3k rpm and cruising around 2.5k rpm area) and I get 23-26 mpg depending on how many times I go WOT at that tank of gas.

I tried driving were I would shift around 2.2-2.5 rpms and cruise below 2k rpms and my mpg were as low as 16. Maybe when your in too low of an rpm this engine falls out of its efficiency range?

there are two o2 sensors right? the one in the cat and another in the o2 housing? so the theory now is that only changing the o2 housing's one the milage can improve significantly

From my expirience with other cars, and best guess on this one; the one in the o2 housing measures your a/f ratio (narrow band) during normal driving. The one in/after the cat just checks that your catalytic converter is working.

LOL, you say that like its way too low. Right now I'm testing out shifting at 2k rpms but under 2.5, and keeping cruising rpms below 2k rpms as long as the motor doesnt start stumbling. I've tested this before with not soo great results, so I'm going to test them again to make sure no other variable affects it such as bad gas etc... I guess 1 test is not good enough, best would be multiple tests and the average of that. (outliers would be disregarded though)

Well... yeah, that does seem way too low. It's your car, drive it the way you like, but my evo hates being below 2k RPM and will even start to buck if I leave it there. This really sucks in stop and go traffic as I have to put the clutch in right as the car finds its rhythm. From 2k to 3k it's okay, but the engine feels bogged and unhappy. When driving normally I shift around 4k which seems to work well.

Obviously things are completely different at WOT, but that's not what this thread is about. For what it's worth, I get 21-22 mpg driving like this with the occasional WOT run thrown in (about 250 miles on a 12 gallon "tank").

Wow, at the 4-4.5 normal shifts...

Well, So far I've driven 75 miles shifting around 2 - 2.3k rpms and cruising between 1.6 - 2k rpms. The gas needle is still above the 3/4 tank line. I'll fill up when it reaches the 3/4 line and devide the miles driven by gallons filled. We'll see how it does in my next fill up.

To be honost, its not fun driving this way, but if it will yeild upper 20's mpg even 30 then why not.

After this I will test shifting at 4k rpms area. What rpms do you guys cruise at usually?

Oh, as for the bogging or stumbling with low rpms, my car doesnt do that unless I go below 1.6-1.5 rpms. But 5th gear I need to keep rpms a little higher around 1.7 to 1.8k rpms area minimum. When I drive I try to accelerate smoothly through out the gears. I shift quickly to keep the momentum going and I noticed it helps a lot for smooth acceleration. Also I give just enough gas to accelerate smoothly and avoid the motor vibrations you get from low rpm high throttling.

I've always been able to get above 25mpg when cruising on the highway (> 70). I only get about 5 mpg on the track, though ...

Why do Evos get such bad gas mileage?

When I had my VW GTI turbo, with full exhaust and intake and reflashed, I would always average 400 miles to the tank, 13.2 gallons. The engine was only a 1.8L, 0.2 less than the Evo.

Does it have to do with the AWD and the bigger turbo the car has?

AWD, bigger turbo, wider tires, and stickier tires all hurt gas mileage.
