My transmission surprise (kinda long)
My transmission surprise (kinda long)
Ok I've had my evo for over a year now and it's treated me pretty good so far. I bought it in Maryland with afew mods on the car. I knew before buying that it had been heavily modded but was brought back to almost stock and traded at a dealer. It was then auctioned and made it's way to a smaller import dealer in MD. I was fully aware of the path that the car took and was prepared to pay for any problems that arose with a 2nd hand modified car. In reality the car runs great only minor common evo problems. The whole time I've owned it the tranny chattered, rattled, and made lots of weird noises. I've asked many questions here about it and brought it to several shops and mechanics who told me it was a throw-out bearing. Ok a throw out bearing it's noisy but I can't change it out without major work to the car and lot's of $$. I was told by several members here to just leave it in until I had to get a new clutch. The clutch on the car is supposed to be an ACT stage 1 street clutch that was installed right before I bought it per the deal. So I wasn't getting a clutch anytime soon. Ok that was the end of it so it was on to more mods.
Just recently I bumped into a friend who owns a transmission shop here in RI. He looks at my car and I offer to let him drive it. I tell him about the bearing and he said he'd listen for it. As we start off he has an almost confused look on his face and I'm like "oh **** he's gonna tell me it's on the way out" (I'm big into cars but I don't mess with tranny's I just don't have the confidence or knowhow yet) He asks me where I got the car and what they said it had on it. We do some hard pulls through the gears and stop. He looks over at me and says that he thinks I have an upgraded transmission. I'm like "uhhhhh what" He begins to tell me that the car grips and pulls exceptionally hard but the that the clutch pedal is very tempermental. Which is true you have to shift the car and release the clutch very precise or it will slip or buck. He also pointed out that at idle it sounds like a bunch of marbles or rocks are tumbling around in the gearbox and it chatters under slow acceleration all signs of a high performance transmission setup. He also thinks that the clutch is much stronger than an ACT stage 1 and that my flywheel is not stock. I've tried to contact the original owner several times since I had the car but the number I got for him is no longer in service so I guess I won't really know until I have this guy take a closer look in about a week or two. People that drive in my car say it pulls really hard and is very precise for an evo with mods I have. Since this is my first evo I don't have much to base it on. I did have a WRX that I just got rid of with cobb stage 2 and it was not even a close match for the evo when it was just about stock ( so I thought). I am excited though, but the noise still bothers me I have to say. If it's true that would be one more issue I wouldn't have to deal with and I can safely move on to more power adders. Sorry for the long post

i hope you have an upgraded trany but i doubt it...it proably was the first evo he ever drove.l and i have a act clutch to,they are very noisy..specially the 2,600 it has a lot of clamping force.the noise you are hearing is from having a aftermarket clutch.even a stock clutch on my evo was noisy i could hear the throwout bearing.....
change the fluid in the trany to 2 quarts of redline mt90 and 1 quart of syncromesh(if u can find it)if not put three quarts on redline mt90 i bet you it will be much smoother.and quiter...good luck and welcome

hahaha Yeah I thought so after posting but what the hell, It can be everyone's laugh for the day.
It was the first evo he ever drove first of all, second he doesn't do work for many performance imports, mostly domestics. Personally I don't know what to think because I know next to nothing about transmissions on evo's, for example what a stock verses upgraded sounds like. I drove a ww VIII at East Coast Mitsu before I bought mine it whined in first but other than that it was relatively quiet. Who Knows
if it is great, if not no problem. If this guy wasn't a friend I would have called bull**** and thought he was just trying to get me in his shop but he's looking at it for nothing. At least I'll know what I have in there, He said there was a grommit we can pop out that will show us the color pressure plate. At least I will be one step closer to finding out what's going on in there.
well good luck it. i hope i get lucky with my evo once i find one. How much r TC's, Trans and Diffs for these cars anyway? I know dealer is alot but r they avaible through the boards and all? and whats the average price. i tried searching and dint find much.

Evo owners are better off buying a new/upgraded diff, tranny, or transfer from Shep or someone. You can get a NEW stage 2 transfer from Shepard for $2800 or a plain Mitsu. OEM transfer for $3400. Talk to Shep, Buschur or TRE if you need a new one. Not sure one the rebuild/upgrade vs. OEM for x-mission but sure its alond the same line of pricing.
I believe you just have an upgraded clutch, not an upgraded transmission.
From my experience driving my stock transmission and then driving an Evo with an upgraded transmission the shifting feels a lot more precise, it almost feels like the gates are smaller. The shifter will be a little harder to move back and forth in neutral as well.
