Not quite a "#@*! THIS SHOP" thread, but still annoying.

If this video is an accurate recording of the death whine: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HErBOCcIIhg

Then I definitely have it. 06 IX MR with around 4600 miles. It recently went into the shop [World Auto Body, Encinitas, CA] and had some framework replaced (all that crap is a little complicated to explain and somewhat irrelevant, I'd like to skip that.) and since they put everything back into place,

1) My UICP seal popped, and then some days later after I tightened it down, one of the LICP seals (the one lowest to the ground, on the left side of the car as you're looking at it) blew, and I had to park the freaking car like a half mile down the road, walk back along the road to find the seal, and then come back and apply it myself.. shoving myself under the little clearance there is under the car

2) It has had a blaring death whine that I truly do not remember it having. I'm still shy at times about driving this car still (I've only put about 1k of those miles on so far), and have had my stalls and jolts.. but I really doubt that I've beaten the **** out of it to the point where the TC would already be going. Still, the whine sounds exactly like that youtube clip.

So, where do I go from here? I've found this picture from another thread
and my roommate and I are going to go to the nearby free hobby garage (on military base) and cinch down all the clamps ourselves, until at some later date, I can get better hoses/clamps.

Beyond that, what steps should I take with my death whine? I don't think I should go straight to the dealership, I mean, there are 4k miles on the damn car and that the TC is already shot is unbelievable.. I'm assuming I should do a fluid replacement but I have no idea where to start and a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. My roommate knows much more about cars than I do and with his help I'm prepared to do whatever I can do myself, but he's got much more experience with muscle cars, not turbocharged imports.

Thanks. Here's a nice pic of the Apex Silver MR, and a beat up old HMMWV.

the whine happened after you clamped down the IC clamps? if its more like a whistle you may have a leak coming from one of the pipes. just check over the clamps and hose fittings. while your at it, its not a bad idea to upgrade to stronger clamps.

or yeah that could even be a cause. a leak can cause a whine similar to that. but just get it checked out.

So you guys would advise that we immediately tighten down the clamps, and if it persists, run to the dealership?

No, I think you should have someone look at it who has even the slightest clue about Evos. I'm sure there's many people here who could figure out your problem in just a few minutes if given the chance in person...or maybe if you had a sound clip.

If it's entirely necessary I'll try to make a video.. but I'm telling you quite honestly, the sound is exactly identical to that youtube video I posted.

Make a boost leak tester per instructions on VFAQ. Then tighten down the clamps and re-test.

Yeah sounds like the whine of death. Did the shop have to drain any fluids? That sounds so bad the tcase may be completely dry.

I say this from personal experience i've had lemon tcase after lemon tcase. Finally rebuilt it myself and so far so good.

man that body shop blows, i took my first car there to get some stuff painted, it was white, he repainted it twice, did not match at all, his work was junk, ended up only paying $100 for the work, but you should take it to the dealer and have them look at it, just as long as its all stock and what not

if ur UICP popped off ur throttle body, then its fairly commin with evos. Stock clamps suck. with 20psi running thru those pipes those soft pipes will def expand, i myself have experienced the UICP pop off my TB at full boost and it hurt! it felt like a semi rammed me from the back. Solution: T BOLT CLAMPS BABY!

as for your whine, i had a 03 and had the infamous TC whine of death. From your video, i cant really say but its very possible its the TC. im pretty sure u can seperate the sound of a TC and a boost leak right? i've heard both and theyre fairly diff. The sound on ur vid isnt that great, best way to show the sound would have been for u to gradually speed up because thats when the TC's dreadful whine slowly kicks in...

get it checked out if u feel its more of a "metal whine". If its a slighty whistle then just t bolt the car. I'd t bolt the IC pipes REGARDLESS

does the wine happen while your sitting still?? rev it up to 3 to 4 k, in neutral, and take a good listen- pop the hood and have your army buds help out. if it is only happening while your moving, its probably the t case. (or tranny) I would post to see if you could get any local evo or dsm guys to take a spin- check your fluids first before you drive!!!!
