Weird Cricket noise coming from engine by belts - PLEASE HELP!!
Hey guys, hopefully someone here might be able to give me an idea of what this noise may be or what to look at. The only way I know how to describe it is it sounds like crickets chirping down by the alternator and the belts. It is NOT coming from the inside the engine itself, I know for sure it is coming from the belt area / alternator.
I do realize it will be nearly impossible to diagnose without actually hearing for yourself, but if you could just give me an idea of what it may be because it is annoying as all hell. Thank you in advance for any suggestions and help.

The chirping sound happens when the belt is too loose and/or glazed on the friction side due to wear. When this happens the belt slips on the pulleys causing the noise. Think of a sneaker on a hardwood floor, when it slips, it chirps. You should just throw on new drive belts and problem solved. I have not changed the belts on my evo yet, but there may be a adjustment. If it has an adjustable tensioner rather than a spring loaded tensioner, you can just tighten the belt by adjusting the tensioner, but if it is spring loaded you cannot and just have to swap belts. Hope this helps.

Get some belt dressing and spay it on. Make sure you only get it on the belt. If it continues, then it's probably a pully making some noise. I believe they have a silicone spray to fix that.

Thank you again for all the replies. I am 99.9% sure I now know what it is. I have determined it is the belts and I am just gonna take it to the dealer and have them replace it since the car is damn near new and still under warranty.
it also seems like it is a fairly common noise for the Evo IX. Just happy to know it is not anything major and will be an easy fix.
Sharkm87: I have the same problem, hit the gas and you really notice it. I'm just glad to know other people have had this issue already and it is not anything in the motor itself and just a simple fix like replacing a timing or idler pulley.

when u guys listen to it, it's at the very bottom of the belt area right? cause someone did change their idler pulley and got it fixed. i thought it was the belt too, but won't the belt make the whole area make the same noise?
