My first tick was the two center pistons slapping the block.

First I thought it was the injectors, too loud, too different. Used a mechanics stethoscope, thought it was a pulley. Noise was coming from the front of the block. Injector was stuck open, fuel thinned out the oil. Lots of damage. MMNA says the injectors are a known issue, and still wouldn't replace under warranty.

That's clutch chatter, and seemingly normal for Evos. Mine did not originally do it, since the second clutch went in, it makes me nuts.

both my mitsubishi's tick intermittently. actually both my mitsubishi's make a lot of mysterious noises. but they both seem to run great, I just try not to worry about it because you'll go crazy chasing a percieved problem. if there's a real problem, the car will let you know and it will be very obvious.

Sometimes with upgraded cams, it is normal. At least that is what I heard.

Mine is most likely rod knock requiring an engine rebuild. Hopefully the OP is luckier...

My car does the exact same thing when its cold, clears up after a 2 min warmup. Really bad durring the winter, almost scary sounding. And to me it sounds like valve train, maybe the oil isnt getting up there quick enough? Oil pump?

what oil are you running? The oil is probably a bit thick during cold temperatur. Probably nothing to worry about, just the lifters.. Try using Mobil1 with low wiscosity - don't know the spelling - but hey I'm just a Swede!

I personally think its the AC, cause it also shuts off when I turn off the AC, or maybe that just causes enough vibration to bring it out to a noticeable level, not sure.
Exactly what mine does, sounds like something is rattling when I'm at idle. I can hear it loud and clear with the AC on and JUST as I turn the AC on.

Did you put a crappy oil filter on right before this happened?... I got a tick after I used a crappy oil filter.
