is this a boost leak or do i need a new tune?

first some info.
ok i moved from watertown ny (elevation aporx 500ft) to rapid city SD (elevation aporx 3300) my car was shipped since getting here the car seem to be actting wierd some days other days its fine.

i never really got on the car since getting here. once i got the car i installed my ams intercooler and ams licp and my buscur Uicp.

since installation of these i hit 23psi (depending on the heat i may hit 24-25psi then i have adjust my MBC) but it drops dramastically towards redline. getting down in 16psi range. before installiong of these and before the car was moved out here i would hold 23-22 all the way to redline. and some days i cant hit full boost in 1st gear.

would this be caused becasue of a boost leak? or is the elevation that drastically changed where i need to get retuned? im running 94 octane.

Altitude reduces the efficiency of the turbo, thus causing more severe boost taper. You also NEVER held 22-23psi to redline. YOu may have held it to 5000rpm, but it certainly tapered 2-3 psi by redline. You never can hit full boost in 1st gear, because there isn't enough load.

Yes, you also need a retune for altitude.

since im north of you any good tuners in this area? so should i cross out the boost leak problem?

Actually, yes, you are relatively close. Join up at RMEVO.com, and we can help you out. Our local tuner is in Cheyenne, which is even closer to you than most of us, so that should work out nicely. Is it really only 3300' up there? It's over 6000' down here...

differnt seasons............if you tune your car in 100 degree heat in the summer and expect it to run the same in 40 degree whether you would be wrong.....

yip i have to agree with War!!

Altitude is a killer and makes our turbos work harder.
people always say they make X amount of boost at 7k rpm!
but until it is logged i am no believer.

i am at 5300ft and i taper to 1.15 bar at 7k rpm with and EVC 6 mapped correctly.
I am gonna try an Actuator soon to see if i can hold more boost towards redline.

this is the first time the car has seen anything higher then 800ft in elevation. so going from 500ft or so to 3300 i was wondering how much of a difference that had on the car and i didnt know if a boost leak could cause what im having since i changed parts before i really even drove the car around here.

Sorry to go OT a bit, but here's a log of one of my runs last week. Logged with my UTEC. Ran 4th out to redline.
I don't have a problem holding good boost up top. There's still some taper.
I still have 2 boost leaks to fix - TB seals and a small leak on the LICP.

Yes, if you fiddled with something, then you should definitely re-check your work for leaks.

Mikesevo, that log isn't valid, because you start all your runs around 5000rpm and don't even peak until 5k. Is that even a stock turbo? Show a log starting at 3000rpm, because the stock turbo peaks closer to 3500rpm. Obviously, a turbo that peaks at 6k isn't going to taper much by 7k, but that's completely irrelevant in this thread.

I guess validity is for Whoop_ass to decide ... the log was him ...
people always say they make X amount of boost at 7k rpm!
but until it is logged i am no believer.
As they say over in OT ... you FAIL!!

Whoop_ass was referring to the stock turbo, and you knew that. The whole conversation leading up to his comments was in reference to the stock turbo's behavior.

Only one person failed here, and it was not me.

Ok he is a simple answer. you just install new piping so it will not hurt to do a leak down and check then go from there. A retune will the new piping will help too.

No need to do a leakdown test - just a boost leak test.
