Thinking about an EVO.... lil help please
I have a 2000 Subaru with a WRX swap, and I think it is time for a new car. My budget should be in the low 20K mark as I hope to be in the market in the spring.
I am a Subaru guy, but I must look at the EVO, as I know it is an amazing car. I am not so much a Subaru fan that I am close minded. I want a nasty, fun daily driver. I know either and STi or EVO can get me there, I just want to understand a little more about the EVO.
Are there any big weak points that I should be aware of (Like WRX 5MT being glass). With my mentioned budget what years/model should I look for, (I may stretch the buget a lil).
Any help and guidance is appreciated
Thanks!!!

well in my opinion EVO is perfect choice for me... it all the depends how you treat the car. and also most older used Evos have been beat on pretty hard so it all depends. tranny and clutch are fine(depends how the cars been treated like i said) for now if you start heavy modding then uprade..
they are pretty much the same car. pick which one you want to be seen in, or the one that looks better to you. unless you are looking at a moded evo/sti (in which case i'd take the evo b/c of its ease of tuning) pick whichever you want.
Well, as far as problems go. If you plan to beat the car a little, plan on spending some money for drivetrain upgrades. Transfer cases are known to go out on just about any evo that sees time at the strip. Also, the 6-speed trans in the MR is known for loosing 4th gear. Most people opt for a rebuilt 5-speed when they loose the 6-speed. The Brembo brakes are prone to clear coat peeling. Some people don't care, but it makes you feel kinda dumb when somebody is checking out your car and then they point out that the "awesome, gigantic brakes....look like crap". I just recently re-cleared my calipers this past weekend. Not a real big job, but something you SHOULDN"T have to do on a $30k vehicle. Other cosmetic problems include bad paint/clear and bad clear on the carbon fiber wing. Most of these cosmetic problems occur in the earlier models ('03,'04) but even some of the newer ones have the same issues. I'm not sure how Subaru stands with mods and warranty, but unless you find a kick *** delearship, don't plan on getting any warranty work covered if your car is modified (even a little bit).
Now, do I regret buying an Evo after finding out about all of these problems? Not for a second. I would never take it back. However, if you are a Subaru fan already, I'd definitely go for the STI.

If you decide to mod a lot, I could go with an RS. The IX makes more power than the predecessor when you start modding because of the mivec. I would recommend you to not get the MR if u mod a lot cuz of the 6speed I heard is weaker than the 5speed.
My impressions have been that both cars are amazing. With the mod nod going to the EVO by far. Though the quality of all the little stuff seems to be in Subarus favor.
I think the EVO's get the aesthetic nod over all but the pre 2002 Imprezas that I consider even. (yea I have one)
If I can I would like to keep my Subaru and get an EVO too. Paint clear is a fairly easy fix, and warranty I could care less; I have never had one and probably never will. (I can't afford new cars).
I will have to drive both the EVO and STi when the time comes, I know my 14 year old is gitty. He has always liked the EVOs over the Scooby. ( >( no Christmas for him).

agree with fox. its either gc with sti everything or evo. but me being a mitsu guy has to go with an evo over a swapped gc although it would be a close second choice.
If you want to do some drag racing get an evo, if you want the "subaru rumble" and the hood scoop, and the blue paint job get a sti. ohh and learn how to shift that bish. I've seen too many missed second gears

pm NYC drifter...hes a personal friend of mine hes owned both, and im sure he'll be happy to give you his input......I can tell you its going to be completely one sided, but im not going to tell you which car he chooses.....Hehehe.
Evo Man... Hands Down. But, since I own an Evo, i obviously like them better. However, I have rode in and drove a 400whp STI (which took about 20k to get it like that, compared to my 14kish for 500whp).... And i did not like how the sti handled as much. Go drive them, honestly. Or post on here for a modded one to give you a ride =)
