I wouldn't run over 40 miles on low, like Evoryder says, it's not smart to do that. Any crap that is in your tank is more likely to get sucked up.

I've actually went like 20 miles with my needle under the E :-p

There was an emergency, and I didn't have the time to fill my car up like I usually do after class.

you're all chickens!!! I've driven close to 60 miles with the light on. pulled into the gas station, and realized I left my wallet on the kitchen counter. spent the next hour on the highway with the windows up, the AC off, and sweating to the oldies. When I had to fill up, I filled with 14.2 gallons.

The fuel goes in the bottom and then is pumped through the pump motor. So, until you start to run dry I don't see how the pump experiences anything different whether the tank is full or near empty.

Because the fuel in the tank cools the pump and prevents it from overheating.
