Antilag is very destructive. Read up on the new "no lift shift" modification for the stock USDM ecu, seems to have sort of the same effect (boost is maintained inbetween shifts).

When the foot is taken off the throttle excess amounts of fuel and air are dumped directly into the manifold to keep the turbo spooled, which causes an immense amount of heat and backfiring.
